Get ready to learn things not traditionally taught to medical doctors! Some of the things you will hear Dr. Buttar and Robert talk about in this week’s show are:

Why is it so hard to figure out this polio-like illness hitting kids? – Doctors say they are baffled by what’s causing an uptick in cases of a paralyzing, polio-like condition among kids across the U.S. The illness, called acute flaccid myelitis, appears to be on the rise in 2018 after causing just a handful of cases in 2017. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it’s investigating 127 reported cases, 62 of them confirmed to be AFM in 22 states. “We have not been able to find the cause of the majority of AFM cases,” the CDC’s Dr. Nancy Messonnier told reporters on Thursday. “Despite extensive laboratory testing, we have not determined what pathogen or immune response caused the arm or leg weakness and paralysis in most patients,” Messonnier added. “We don’t know who may be at higher risk for developing AFM or the reasons why they may be at higher risk.”   Link found between chronic inflammation and risk for Alzheimer’s disease – While it is widely shown that possessing the ApoE4 gene is the major genetic risk factor of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), not all ApoE4 carriers develop AD. For the first time, researchers at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) have shown that ApoE4 linked with chronic inflammation dramatically increases the risk for AD. This can be detected by sequential measurements of C-reactive protein, a common clinical test which can be could be done routinely in a clinical setting. “Finding out what mediating factors for ApoE4 increase AD risk is important for developing intervention and prevention of the disease,” explained corresponding author Wendy Qiu, MD, Ph.D., associate professor of psychiatry and pharmacology & experimental therapeutics at BUSM. “Since many elders have chronic low-grade inflammation after suffering from common diseases like cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, pneumonia and , or after having surgeries, rigorously treating chronic systemic inflammation in ApoE4 carriers could be effective for prevention of Alzheimer’s dementia.”   Study: Youngest Children in Classrooms Frequently Mislabeled as ADHD – A recent study made some international mainstream papers recently that warned of medicating children misdiagnosed as ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), simply because they were the youngest students in their class. UK’s online Daily Mail included a quote from the lead author of that study, Dr. Martin Whitely, who stated: “It appears that across the globe some teachers are mistaking the immaturity of the youngest children in their class for ADHD. Although teachers don’t diagnose it, they are often the first to suggest a child may have ADHD.” The study was published by the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, and Allied Disciplines on October 14, 2018, with the title: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder late birthdate effect common in both high and low prescribing international jurisdictions: systematic review. The “late birthdate” label describes situations where a child’s birthday falls on a later date of the year than most of his or her classmates’ birthdays. This potentially places that child at a less mature stage of development as the others in the same class.   Flu jab protected just one in 10 pensioners last year, amid concerns new vaccines will run out – Last year’s flu jab protected just one in 10 pensioners, new figures show, amid concerns new boosted vaccinations could run out. An evaluation by Public Health England (PHE) reveals that the vaccines given to millions of patients last winter had little effect. The worst protection was among over 65s – the age group most vulnerable to flu – with effectiveness of 10.1 per cent and none at all against some key strains. Figures among younger adults were little better at 12.2 per cent, with rates of 26.9 per cent among children, the provisional end-of-season estimates show. The failings contributed to the worst flu season for seven years, with 15,000 deaths from the virus, around twice the average figure, and the worst NHS performance on record. Health officials hope to avert such a crisis this winter, with new types of jabs on offer for all adults.   Herpes virus is linked to half of Alzheimer’s cases, scientist claims – The herpes virus could be linked to at least half of all Alzheimer’s disease cases, a scientist has claimed. Professor Ruth Itzhaki, who has spent more than 25 years at the University of Manchester investigating a potential link between the two, said studies carried out in Taiwan suggested that the risk of dementia was much greater in those infected with herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of herpes simplex virus (HSV): HSV1, also known as oral herpes, which causes cold sores and blisters around the mouth and on the face; and HSV2, which is generally responsible for genital herpes outbreaks. Prof Itzhaki said: “The striking results include evidence that the risk of senile dementia is much greater in those who are infected with HSV, and that anti-herpes antiviral treatment causes a dramatic decrease in number of those subjects severely affected by HSV1 who later develop dementia. “HSV1 could account for 50% or more of Alzheimer’s disease cases.”

Some of the things you will hear Dr. Buttar and Robert talk about in this week’s show are:

A quiet rise in unvaccinated children could put the U.S. at risk of outbreaks – Vaccine exemption rates among infants and school-aged children have been quietly rising, creating volatile pockets of unimmunized individuals, new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows. For the third consecutive school year, unvaccinated communities have seen small but notable growth, according to the CDC’s latest National Immunization Survey. One school in Oregon has toddler vaccination rateslower than those in Venezuela. Only half of the preschoolers in the state received their MMR vaccines, compared to 57 percent of Venezuelan toddlers. Overall, the CDC reported child vaccination rates have been steadily increasing since 2001. The agency’s survey encompasses millions of children across 49 states* and the District of Columbia by pulling data from health care providers and schools. Their findings show that vaccine coverage remains high for 19- to 35-month-olds and kindergarteners.

‘Polio Like Illness’ Sweeps Across States, Some Blame Vaccines – A paralyzing condition being called a “polio-like illness” by the media is spreading at an uncomfortable pace throughout the United States. NBC News claims that 26 states are reporting a potential 87 new cases of the illness. The CDC confirmed 38 cases in September but failed to narrow those statistics down to exact states. Colorado, Texas, Minnesota, Maryland, and now New York, are all individually reporting potential cases of AFM. The NBC survey combines official and potential cases. The official name of the illness is acute flaccid myelitis or AFM. It is a viral infection, however, health officials haven’t been able to confirm a single specific virus (this is something Dr. Tenpenny spoke about on the radio over the weekend). Dizziness, an inability to properly walk, difficulty swallowing and arm mobility issues have all been hallmarks of the onset of AFM.

Newlywed Dies of Sepsis After Getting Flu – A Wisconsin newlywed started to feel sick with the flu on a Monday. By Friday, she was dead. Katie McQuestion, a 26-year-old radiology technician from Kenosha, Wisconsin, got a flu shot to comply with hospital policy and had no underlying medical conditions, but she caught the flu and developed a serious complication from it: sepsis. She died on Jan. 2. “She was the picture of health,” her mother told ABC News, adding that McQuestion was married in September. “No 29-year-old should have to bury his wife.” McQuestion complained she didn’t feel well on a mother-daughter trip to a dress shop on Dec. 29, said her mother, who asked not to be named. The following day, McQuestion was sent home sick from work. Her mother said she picked up a prescription for her on New Year’s Eve. Then, on New Year’s day, McQuestion called her mother and said, “Mom, I’ve never been this sick,” her mother recalled. McQuestion’s parents and husband met her in the emergency room, and doctors told them that she had a high heart rate, low blood pressure and a low temperature. They gave her anti-nausea medication and something to help her sleep, her mother said.

Does risk of embryonic malformations outweigh benefits of using SSRIs in pregnant women? – A comprehensive new review article presents the most current understanding of the role selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) play in increased risk of multiple diverse gestational malformations and takes aim at the ongoing debate over whether SSRIs as a drug class can cause these malformations. The article, which also highlights the importance of serotonin—a key mediator of bioelectric control mechanisms—in normal embryonic development, is published in the preview issue of Bioelectricity. Entitled “Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor Use During Pregnancy and Major Malformations: The Importance of Serotonin for Embryonic Development and the Effect of Serotonin Inhibition on the Occurrence of Malformations,” the article was coauthored by Anick Bérard, Ph.D., University of Montreal (Quebec, Canada), Michael Levin, Ph.D., Tufts University (Medford, MA), Thomas Sadler, Ph.D., University of Utah School of Medicine (Salt Lake City), and David Healy, MD, Hergest Unit (Bangor, U.K.).

Milk thistle is not only good for your liver – it can protect you from the toxic effects of chemotherapy, too – You’ve probably heard of milk thistle, even if you’re not quite sure exactly what it is or what it can do for your health. In fact, there’s a chance you see it growing wild all the time and don’t even realize the power this humble weed possesses. Milk thistle has many great qualities, but it is most revered for its effects on the liver. It can improve liver enzymes, assist with rebuilding cells in the liver, and help those suffering from liver ailments. One liver-related health problem that has been growing in recent years is nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Milk thistle can help to treat the condition and stop it from becoming its more serious form, steatohepatitis. Research has shown that milk thistle can help hepatitis patients get back to work sooner, and it also reduces anxiety and depression.

Get ready to learn things not traditionally taught to medical doctors!
Some of the things you will hear Dr. Buttar and Robert talk about in this week’s show are:

The 5 Biggest Fears Doctors Confess To Other Doctors – Like prep sports or prime-time television, medical meetings have seasons. In the spring and fall, my calendar fills with invitations to keynote national conferences. I try to get to the venue a few hours before I’m scheduled to speak, so I can “take the pulse” of fellow doctors, asking them about their practices, patients and the future of medicine. Figuratively speaking, the industry’s pulse is racing with fear. I’ve observed that in just the past 12 months, the once-mild anxieties of American doctors have transformed into clear and present phobias. These are extraordinary times in medicine, giving way to five intense fears.

A Man Took Antibiotics Before Going to the Dentist. He Developed An Ultra-Rare Brain Side Effect  – As scary as it may sound, a root canal is a fairly routine dental procedure. But for one 60-year-old man, the procedure turned life threatening when he developed meningitis, a swelling of the tissue surrounding his brain and spinal cord. Even more surprising, though, was that this dangerous outcome wasn’t due to some ghastly slip of the dentist’s drill or a germ-coated dental instrument. Indeed, the procedure went off without a hitch. But several days after the procedure, the man arrived at an emergency room in New Jersey with a fever, headaches and neck pain. He informed doctors of his recent root canal and also mentioned that his dentist had instructed him to take amoxicillin — a common antibiotic — several days before the procedure. Because of his symptoms, doctors suspected he had meningitis, which is almost always caused by an infection of some kind. So, they started him on antibiotics, but he only got worse. Easy to find a Palm Beach Gardens dental crowning specialist to help him.

Multiple Sclerosis Development in Two Teens After HPV Vaccination – Researchers from the University of Miami presented 2 cases of multiple sclerosis (MS) developing in teens after receiving Gardasil, a human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. Live, attenuated vaccines are not recommended for people with MS. Gardasil (quadrivalent human HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18) is an inactivated recombinant vaccine approved in 2006 for the prevention of HPV infections and related cancers. Since then, several reports of central nervous system demyelinating disease (eg, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, neuromyelitis optica, clinically isolated syndrome, MS) have been reported after administration of the vaccine. At the 2018 ACTRIMS Forum in San Diego, California, study author Ye Hu reported on 2 teens who experienced MS symptoms 1 to 2 weeks after receiving the vaccination. A 14-year-old male started to experience left retro-orbital pain and blurred vision in the left eye 2 weeks after receiving his third dose of Gardasil. He was diagnosed with left optic neuritis and reported a second occurrence 2 months after his initial symptoms.

Autistic Kid Pulled From School For Vaccine Refusal – For some parents and kids, this time of year is the start of lots of new things. But for some, its a frustrating time whereas vaccination policies tend to make the return to school bitter-sweet. For Rachel Atwood, bitter is hardly a strong enough word to describe her current state of affairs with the Ottawa County school system. Atwood’s son, Timmy, is autistic. He’s been non-verbal up until just recently, a big accomplishment that should be time for celebration. However, the Early Childhood Center school system has denied Timmy the ability to attend the school because Rachel doesn’t want him to have the chickenpox vaccine. Atwood says that the risks posed by his dismissal from school are far greater than any risks associated with chickenpox. “Timmy is making amazing progress at his school,” she told 13 ON YOUR SIDE. “He said ‘Mommy’ for the first time a few weeks ago and we’re seeing amazing growth and hope for his future and it’s all because of the program for this school.”

Get ready to learn things not traditionally taught to medical doctors!
Some of the things you will hear Dr. Buttar and Robert talk about in this week’s show are:

Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded to two researchers who discovered how to make the immune system fight cancer – This morning, the Nobel Prize committee awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine to two scientists who, separately, discovered proteins that “brake” the immune system — work that paved the way for what the committee calls “an entirely new principle for cancer therapy.” The winners are James P. Allison of the United States and Tasuku Honjo of Japan. Working in the 1990s, both scientists studied proteins that regulate the immune system and keep it in check. For Allison, this protein was CTLA-4 protein, while Honjo studied a protein called PD-1. Both CTLA-4 and PD-1 regulate the immune system and keep it from being too aggressive. Therefore, it’s possible to use an antibody to target these proteins and shut them down. When these proteins are shut down, and the brakes “released,” our body’s immune system can go on the attack against cancerous tumors, a form of treatment today called immunotherapy. (Both proteins brake the immune system, just in different ways.)

Health-related quality of life overlooked in cancer drug studies – A McMaster University-led review and analysis of randomized clinical trials is questioning whether interventions which prolong progression-free survival in cancer patients, improve their health-related quality of life. The systematic review and quantitative analysis of 52 articles reporting on 38 randomized clinical trials involving 13,979  across 12 cancer types revealed no significant association between survival when the disease is not getting worse, or “progression-free survival”, and health-related  of . The results were published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine. “Given the increased use of progression-free survival as the primary outcome in new oncology  trials, and uncertainty of overall survival, it remains possible that patients are receiving toxic and/or expensive treatments without experiencing important benefit,” said Feng Xie, senior author of the study and a professor of the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact at McMaster.

Cancer hijacks the microbiome to glut itself on glucose – Cancer needs energy to drive its out-of-control growth. It gets energy in the form of glucose, in fact consuming so much glucose that one method for imaging cancer simply looks for areas of extreme glucose consumption—where there is consumption, there is cancer. But how does cancer get this glucose? A University of Colorado Cancer Center study published today in the journal Cancer Cell shows that leukemia undercuts the ability of normal cells to consume glucose, thus leaving more glucose available to feed its own growth. “Leukemia  create a diabetic-like condition that reduces  going to , and as a consequence, there is more glucose available for the . Literally, they are stealing glucose from normal cells to drive growth of the tumor,” says Craig Jordan, Ph.D., investigator at University of Colorado Cancer Center, division chief of the Division of Hematology and the Nancy Carroll Allen Professor of Hematology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine

Financial Incentives for Doctors to Vaccinate as Many Children as Possible – Keep Patients on Statins – There are monetary awards for doctors and other mainstream medical practitioners who maintain high levels of compliance for prescription drugs (including vaccines), and doctors’ visits. These incentives to get more patients into their offices and to receive as many vaccines and prescription drugs as possible come from the insurance industry. In 2016, the evidence for these medical financial kickbacks was displayed online with a pamphlet from Blue Cross (BC), Blue Shield (BS), and Blue Cross Network (BCN). Here’s a screenshot of page 15 from their 2016 Provider Incentive Program pamphlet that offers financial awards for maintaining CDC vaccination schedules.

New Zealand Parents Say Rotavirus Vaccine Nearly Killed Their Baby – The rotavirus vaccine is one of the most popular immunizations on the schedule. While it is mostly an understated part of the vaccine process, some parents in New Zealand are raising awareness for the vaccine’s potential deadly side. David and Sonya Cooper were interviewed in the New Zealand Herald following their infant’s battle with the rotavirus vaccine side effects. “Ripped to shreds with stress,” they said as their baby was wisked away by surgeons at Auckland’s Starship children’s hospital. While their baby Jude made it through surgery, he remains under close watch by hospital staff. Sonya says that following the rotavirus vaccine, Jude changed. “He started refusing feeds, his nappies dried up and he was constantly grizzly, lethargic and spent his day flopped in pain in my arms.” He was vomitting and his conditioned worsed, symptoms which were seemingly derived from the rotavirus vaccine.

The gut bacteria and genetics research trying to unlock the secrets of autism In Northland in mid-winter, 10-year-old Amy was worried the unwell and unwanted animals at the local SPCA branch must be getting cold. She drew an abstract artwork, had it photocopied and sold the copies across the neighbourhood. “We went to the SPCA and gave it the money,” says her mother, Lynne Hansen. “It was all her idea. She has an amazing little mind, and so much empathy.” Even as a preschooler, however, there were signs something “wasn’t quite right”. Amy was emotive, reactive and easily frustrated when she could not convey her feelings. “She was a very independent little girl, not very huggy, very inflexible in her thinking. You felt at a loss because you didn’t know how to help this lovely, curly-haired little girl – it was an awful time.” Amy was seven when she was diagnosed with autism but Hansen recognised the signs long before then. “She is intelligent, animated, but she struggles to manage herself. She is a perfectionist – if she hasn’t got a clear pathway from start to finish where she can succeed, she will have a meltdown. So I knew Amy was on the spectrum – I just did not have the diagnostic piece of paper.”

Some of the things you will hear Dr. Buttar and Robert talk about in this week’s show are:

Nearly half of resident physicians report burnout – Resident physician burnout in the U.S. is widespread, with the highest rates concentrated in certain specialties, according to research from Mayo Clinic, OHSU and collaborators. The findings appear on Tuesday, Sept. 18, in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Physician burnout is a dangerous mix of exhaustion and depersonalization that contributes to physicians making mistakes while administering health care. The study found 45 percent of respondents experienced at least one major symptom of burnout, with those in urology, neurology, emergency medicine and general surgery at the highest risk. Regardless of specialty, high levels of anxiety and low levels of empathy reported during  were associated with burnout symptoms during residency. “Our data show wide variability in the prevalence of burnout by clinical specialty, and that anxiety, social support and empathy during medical school relate to the risk of burnout during residency,” says Liselotte Dyrbye, M.D., a Mayo Clinic researcher and first author of the article.

First gut bacteria may affect future ability to fight chronic diseases  – Differences in the first microorganisms that arrive in the gut after birth, and their order of arrival, have a lasting impact on how gastrointestinal system looks later in life, according to a study. Researchers at the University of Alberta believe serious chronic diseases can be warded off by adjusting the microbiome of gastrointestinal tract, which is unique to the body — like fingerprints. Their findings were published Tuesday in the journal eLife. “Each of us harbors a microbiome that is vastly distinct, even for identical twins,” microbial ecologist Dr. Jens Walter said in a University of Alberta press release. “Microbiomes are important for our health, but they appear to be shaped by many unknown factors, so it’s hugely important to understand why we are all different.” Problems with the gastrointestinal system have been linked to obesity, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer, neurological disorders, autism and allergies. “If we know what drives specific microbiomes in specific people, we can have a much more rational approach to potentially altering the microbiome, and developing strategies to address those diseases,” Walter said.

Spanish flu pandemic’ could return, doctors warn – It was the deadliest pandemic of the 20th century, killing tens of millions of people around the world in the months following the end of the First World War. And as historians mark the centenary of the Spanish flu’s outbreak this month, doctors are warning that a deadly flu strain could return and spread across the globe. Dr Fari Ahmad, a Cheshire GP, warned against the “complacent” assumption it could not happen in the 21st century. “In theory, yes,” said the NHS practitioner when asked on BBC Breakfast if we could experience something similar to the Spanish flu. “The flu has not gone away completely and it’s certainly not harmless,” she explained. “When the Spanish flu happened I don’t think people quite understood what was going on for a while. “We understand how the flu spreads so I think we are in a better place, but I wouldn’t say be complacent.” It is not know precisely where the 1918 Spanish flu began, but it took its name from the first cases discovered and publicized in Spain. At its height, the disease is believed to have infected a third of the world’s population.

Question of The Day!

Hi
I was diagnosed with stage 4 Breast cancer in bones last year . I have been following alternative protocols as well as endocrine treatments from conventional medicine . My symptoms and disease has improved but still not yet in complete remission . What do you think I shall add to my protocol to improve gut health especially SIBO which my alternative doctor diagnosed and gave me few weeks treatment but after stopping the treatment symptoms come back . Please recommended further !

Some of the things you will hear Dr. Buttar and Robert talk about in this week’s show are:

New Study Says Vaccine Injured Kids Should Get More Vaccines – A new study says that if a vaccine causes a bad reaction in a child, you can still get more vaccines. The study says that a child who has an adverse event following an initial vaccine isn’t likely to have another adverse event with subsequent vaccines. “Most patients with a history of mild or moderate adverse events following immunization [AEFI] can be safely reimmunized,” write Gaston De Serres, MD, of Laval University, Quebec, and colleagues. It’s difficult to imagine that this study is going over well with parents of vaccine injured children. No matter what any “study” claims, it is hard to imagine any parent trusting a vaccine after watching their child endure an injury from one. This is the first reimmunizing study to be accomplished.

Raising Kids With Religion Or Spirituality May Protect Their Mental Health: Study – A new study from Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health finds that kids and teens who are raised with religious or spiritual practices tend to have better health and mental health as they age. But not to worry if you’re not a service-attender. The research, published last week in the American Journal of Epidemiology, finds that people who prayed or meditated on their own time also reaped similar benefits, including lower risk of substance abuse and depression later on. The team looked at data from 5,000 people taking part in the long-term Nurses’ Health Study II and its next generation Growing Up Today Study (GUTS). They were interested in whether the frequency with which a child/teen attended religious services with their parents or prayed/meditated on their own was correlated with their health and mental health as they grew into their 20s. The young people were followed for anywhere from eight to 14 years.

Daily aspirin may be harmful for healthy older adults, large study finds – For decades, a daily dose of aspirin has been widely considered a way to protect healthy people from cardiovascular disease and even cancer. But a large international study finds that even at low doses, long-term use of aspirin may be harmful — without providing any benefit — for older people who have not already had a heart attack or stroke. The new research reinforces the results of a study published in late August, which found that daily low-dose aspirin was too risky to be prescribed to patients at moderate risk of heart disease. In the August study and the new one, researchers found a significant risk of internal gastric bleeding caused by the medication, which thins the blood. Older patients experienced no health benefits from taking aspirin, according to the new report, published Sunday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Household disinfectants could be making kids overweight – Multi-surface cleaners and other commonly used household disinfectants could be making children overweight by altering the bacteria found in their guts, a new study published Monday in the Canadian Medical Association Journal suggests. Infants living in households where antimicrobial disinfectants are used at least weekly were twice as likely to have higher levels of the bacteria Lachnospiraceae at ages 3 to 4 months than children whose homes did not frequently use disinfectants, the Canadian researchers found. When those children with higher levels of Lachnospiraceae were 3 years old, their body mass index (BMI) was higher than children who do not live in homes that frequently use disinfectants, the study also showed. The bacteria Lachnospiraceae are “a normal component of our gut microbiota,” Anita Kozyrskyj, senior author of the study and a University of Alberta pediatrics professor, said in a CMAJ podcast.

Watchdog slams safeguards for foster kids on psych drugs – Thousands of foster children may be getting powerful psychiatric drugs prescribed to them without basic safeguards, says a federal watchdog agency that found a failure to care for youngsters whose lives have already been disrupted. A report released Monday by the Health and Human Services inspector general’s office found that about 1 in 3 foster kids from a sample of states were prescribed psychiatric drugs without treatment plans or follow-up, standard steps in sound medical care. Kids getting mood-altering drugs they don’t need is only part of the problem. Investigators also said children who need medication to help them function at school or get along in social settings may be going untreated. The drugs include medications for attention deficit disorder, anxiety, PTSD, depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Foster kids are much more likely to get psychiatric drugs than children overall.

Question of The Day!

Hi Robert and Dr. Buttar,

I have heard that dental work, such as crowns, dental implants from BlueDot, removal of teeth are causing breast cancer, heart attacks. And this book is talking about it all. Hidden Epicdemic, by Thomas Levy, MD, JD. Silent Oral Infections cause most heart attacks and breast cancer.

In looking into this it’s extremely costly to have dental work changed and there are not many places that you can even go to to get help.

Can you help me with this? Really concerned about it.

Thanks
Kay

Get ready to learn things not traditionally taught to medical doctors!
Some of the things you will hear Dr. Buttar and Robert talk about in this week’s show are:

It’s Hard for Doctors to Unlearn Things. That’s Costly for All of Us. – We know it can be hard to persuade physicians to do some things that have proven benefits, such as monitor blood pressure or keep patients on anticoagulants. But it might be even harder to get them to stop doing things. In May, a systematic review in JAMA Pediatrics looked at the medical literature related to overuse in pediatric care published in 2016. The articles were ranked by the quality of methods; the magnitude of potential harm to patients from overuse; and the potential number of children that might be harmed. In 2016 alone, studies were published that showed that we still recommend that children consume commercial rehydration drinks (like Pedialyte), which cost more, when their drink of choice would do. We give antidepressants to children too often. We induce deliveries too early, instead of waiting for labor to kick in naturally, which is associated with developmental issues in children born that way. We get X-rays of ankles looking for injuries we almost never find. And although there’s almost no evidence that hydrolyzed formulas do anything to prevent allergic or autoimmune disease, they’re still recommended in many guidelines.

Why so many people with autism never make it to their 40th birthday. – Elizabeth* has a six-year-old daughter with autism, who she describes as “extraordinary, bright, inquisitive, sensitive, kind, fiery and impulsive”. Sarah* was diagnosed when she was five, but even before that, her mum started noticing a common theme in her emotional responses: distress. “My daughter was three years old when I began to see that she was suffering from anxiety,” Elizabeth tells Mamamia. “Her responses were often extreme to certain situations.” Now, as a primary school student, “She is, more often than not, quite stressed and extremely heightened.” Early intervention, however, including “a combination of medication and professional treatment,” has vastly improved Sarah’s quality of life. She hasn’t been bullied at school, she’s able to make and retain friendships, and she’s been taught how to remove herself from a situation when she starts to feel overwhelmed.

MORE studies confirm the link between childhood vaccines and autism – While the pharmaceutical industry, and their puppets in mainstream medicine and media, continue to claim that there is no link between vaccines and autism, multiple scientific reviews have confirmed what we’ve long suspected: A common vaccine ingredient is indeed connected to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). As World Mercury Project reports, two recent studies have highlighted the potential role mercury exposure plays in the onset of ASD. Ethylmercury is used to make thimerosal, a popular vaccine preservative that’s 50-percent mercury by weight. Ethylmercury is one of the two most common forms of mercury that people are exposed to. Ethylmercury is a type of inorganic mercury, which makes it different from the organic methylmercury found in fish. Vaccine propagandists say that this means thimerosal is safe — but a substantial (and growing) body of research has shown this assertion to be false.

The suppressed truth about Tylenol: It’s toxic to children – If you were to ask your average mainstream doctor, or investigate the issue in official scientific journals, chances are you’d discover that acetaminophen (Tylenol) is generally classified as being safe for pregnant women and developing children. But a closer look at actual science tells a much different story. While the internet is saturated with seemingly scientific information about the alleged safety and effectiveness of Tylenol, there also exists copious evidence to the contrary, suggesting that this popular pain drug is particularly harmful for children. These damaging effects can also be passed down from mother to child during pregnancy. Dr. William Parker, Ph.D., an associated professor at Duke University, in an analysis compiled for GreenMedInfo.com, unpacks many of the known dangers associated with Tylenol, including the drug’s neurotoxic properties that are especially problematic in young people whose brains are still in the developmental phase.

Study: Painkillers linked to increased risk of heart attack, stroke – Many people reach for painkillers to get rid of headaches or reduce fever, but some of those common medicines could raise your risk of heart disease or stroke, according to a new report. Researcher from Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark recently conducted a study, published in the British Medical Journal, to explore the cardiovascular risks associated with diclofenac, a traditional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). To do so, they used national registry data that included information on 6.3 million adults in Denmark. The participants, aged 46 to 56, were split into groups with either low, moderate or high baseline cardiovascular risk and were followed for 20 years from 1996 until 2016. They found that, within 30 days of starting diclofenac, there was an increased rate of major adverse cardiovascular events, such as irregular heart beat or flutter, ischemic stroke, heart failure and heart attack, compared to those starting other traditional NSAIDs.

CDC: 415,000 preventable deaths from heart disease, stroke in 2016 – Cardiovascular events, including heart attacks and strokes, caused 2.2 million preventable hospitalizations and 415,000 deaths in 2016, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In addition, these incidents resulted in $32.7 billion in costs, the CDC reported in its Vital Signs report Thursday. Each day, more than 1,000 people die from heart attacks, strokes, heart failure and other related conditions. “Adults can seize the day using daily opportunities to reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke,” Dr. Anne Schuchat, principal deputy Director of CDC, said in a press release. “Many of these cardiovascular events are happening to middle-aged adults — who we wouldn’t normally consider to be at risk. Most of these events can be prevented through daily actions to help lower risk and better manage medical conditions.”

Get ready to learn things not traditionally taught to medical doctors!
Some of the things you will hear Dr. Buttar and Robert talk about in this week’s show are:

We took a scientific look at whether weed or alcohol is worse for you — and there appears to be a winner – Which is worse for you: weed or whiskey? It’s a tough call, but based on the peer-reviewed science, there appears to be a clear answer. Keep in mind that there are dozens of factors to account for when comparing the health effects of alcohol and marijuana, including how the substances affect your heart, brain, and behavior, and how likely you are to get hooked. Time is important, too — while some effects are noticeable immediately, others only begin to crop up after months or years of use. The comparison is slightly unfair for another reason: While scientists have been researching the effects of alcohol for decades, the science of cannabis is murkier because of its mostly illegal status. Here’s what we know about which substance is more harmful.

MAN DIES AFTER MOB ATTACKS PARAMEDICS TRYING TO SAVEOVERDOSING DRUG USER – A man has died in Australia after paramedics trying to save him were attacked by an angry mob. According to The Australian, paramedics were called to the Riverwood suburb of Sydney around 8 a.m. local time Sunday. There they found a 25-year-old man suffering from a suspected drug overdose. But the man’s family members quickly became angry and attempted to intervene. The dispute attracted the attention of others nearby, and soon as many as 80 irate men had gathered around the ambulance. The men began to harass and threaten the paramedics, before one person charged into a female medical worker, injuring her shoulder. Meanwhile, the ill man continued to deteriorate. As the emergency workers barricaded themselves inside their ambulance, the group outside became more violent and demanded a a defibrillator and drugs believing they could treat the young man.

More antibiotics could be key to battling antibiotic resistance, surprising study shows – Antibiotic resistance could be tackled by giving people a combination of drugs which no longer work on their own, a new study suggests. Scientists have discovered thousands of drug cocktails which can fight bacteria even though bacteria may have grown resistant to them individually Previously it was thought that the downside of combining antibiotics outweigh the benefit because of dangerous interactions. But the University of California discovered around 8,000 combinations of four and five pills that are effective, a breakthrough which researchers say could be a major step forward in protecting public health. “I was blown away by how many effective combinations there are as we increased the number of drugs,” said Van Savage, the study’s other senior author and a UCLA professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and of biomathematics. “People may think they know how drug combinations will interact, but they really don’t.”

Lung damage in 9/11 victims could be helped by diet changes, an NYU study finds – Firefighters who suffered lung damage after inhaling particles in the line of duty on Sept. 11, 2001, may be able to quell or reverse the damage simply by changing their diets, according to a new scientific study. The study from NYU School of Medicine researchers outlines a novel way to predict the development of lung injury in disaster victims like 9/11 firefighters. By testing blood for abnormalities in metabolites — chemicals produced as the body breaks down fats, proteins and carbohydrates — researchers can reasonably predict whether the subject will develop lung damage, according to the study. Armed with this knowledge, researchers hope that disaster victims and first responders will be able to breath freer in the future by correcting these abnormalities through dietary changes. “There is a positive aspect to all this,” said Dr. Anna Nolan, principal investigator of the study. “Although these folks had a terrible exposure, they hopefully were able to learn something that would benefit them, but also other individuals that have similar exposure.”

Guidance on which flu vaccine to get: Shots for kids, and maybe go egg-free – People wondering about flu shots are getting some very specific guidance this week: Pediatricians say kids should get a shot if possible and not the FluMist nasal spray, and a major hospital group says it’s choosing egg-free vaccines for patients and staff. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends shots for children of all ages, even though the needle-free vaccine will be available, saying the shots work better. FluMist is an alternative for children who completely refuse to get a shot, the AAP says in its latest guidelines. And the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is taking that a step further, saying it will only be buying the two egg-free vaccines on the market: Flucelvax and FluBlok. That’s because there is some evidence these two formulations may work better than the older vaccines grown in eggs, said Dr. Richard Zimmerman, who advises the UPMC Influenza Committee. “The egg-free vaccines appear to have perhaps a 10 percent higher effectiveness over the traditional egg-based vaccines,” Zimmerman said in an interview. “Given the recent information about the egg-free vaccine, I plan for my family to get the egg-free this year.”

Get ready to learn things not traditionally taught to medical doctors!
Some of the things you will hear Dr. Buttar and Robert talk about in this week’s show are:

Patients with high blood pressure unlikely to reduce salt: More drugs needed to treat hypertension due to increased salt intake Patients with high blood pressure are relying solely on medication to reduce their risk of heart attack, stroke and heart failure, rather than decreasing salt intake as instructed by their physicians, according to research presented today at ESC Congress 2018, the annual meeting of the European Society of Cardiology. Lack of adherence to recommended lifestyle changes is leading to higher salt intake for hypertensive patients, more medications needed to treat their condition and more side effects from those medications, according to lead author Dr Kazuto Ohno, Enshu Hospital, Hamamatsu, Japan.

Study finds sucralose produces previously unidentified metabolites – Sucralose, a widely used artificial sweetener sold under the trade name Splenda, is metabolized in the gut, producing at least two fat-soluble compounds, according to a recent study using rats. The finding differs from the studies used to garner regulatory approval for sucralose, which reported that the substance was not broken down in the body. The new study also found that sucralose itself was found in fatty tissues of the body. The researchers used the same experimental model used by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to assess the safety of foods based on accepted daily intake. In this case, that involved administering an average dose of 80.4 milligrams/kilogram/day to 10  for 40 days. Urine and feces from the rats were collected and assessed for those 40 days, and for the following two weeks. At the end of the two-week follow-up period, fatty tissue from a subset of the rats was also tested. The researchers, from North Carolina State University and Avazyme Inc. – an analytical testing company—used techniques designed to detect both fat- and water-soluble metabolites. That’s significant because industry did not use state-of-the-art techniques that targeted the full suite of fat-soluble metabolites in the studies it submitted to the FDA when seeking FDA approval for sucralose.

Risk of Parkinson’s disease increases with statin drug use – What if the drug meant to treat you actually gave you a different, just-as-bad disease? A report published in the medical journal Movement Disorders says this could be the case with statins, linking the use of the drugs to an increased risk of Parkinson’s disease. Statins are a class of drugs prescribed to prevent heart attacks and strokes. The drug works by blocking the liver enzyme responsible for the production of cholesterol. By doing this, the drug lowers your body’s cholesterol levels and decreases your risk for cardiovascular conditions. Some medical professionals have come to attribute statins with neuroprotective effects, but the authors of the study say the evidence for this is inconclusive at best. Dr. Xuemei Huang, a professor of neurology at Penn State College of Medicine and one of the authors of the study, implies this could be a misunderstanding. Past research suggests that higher cholesterol levels could reduce the risk for Parkinson’s. Incidentally, statins are prescribed to people who need to lower their cholesterol levels.

Aspirin does not reduce initial vascular events in low-to-moderate risk population – In a moderate-risk population with low event rates, aspirin did not significantly reduce initial vascular events, according to the ARRIVE study presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress. Among 12,546 patients randomly assigned to receive enteric-coated aspirin (Bayer) 100 mg daily or placebo and followed for a median of 60 months, the primary efficacy endpoint of time to first occurrence of CV death, MI, unstable angina, stroke or transient ischemic attack occurred in 4.29% of the aspirin group vs. 4.48% of the placebo group (HR = 0.96; 95% CI, 0.81-1.13), according to results of an intention-to-treat analysis. “ARRIVE attempted to address the issue of aspirin for primary prevention in subjects at moderate risk for cardiovascular disease in a pragmatic, primary-care-based study,” J. Michael Gaziano, MD, MPH, chief of the division of aging at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, said during a press conference. “We ended up with a lower-risk population than we had intended. The results showed that aspirin did not significantly reduce a composite of vascular events in the intention-to-treat population. The effects of aspirin tended to be the same as in other primary prevention studies.”

QUESTION OF THE DAY:

Hi Dr. Buttar, Robert and Super Don.

I have a question about my father in law. He’s been put on a catheter indefinitely. His bladder is not emptying on its own. He recently had some work done on his enlarged prostate, which was delayed too long, and this is the end result. His bladder has, for lack of a better word, a herniated area and this is part of the problem. Do you have any suggestions of products we could give him to help remedy this? Thanks for any info you can provide. I love listening to the show, keep fighting the good fight, you are helping so many people.

Sara

Get ready to learn things not traditionally taught to medical doctors!
Some of the things you will hear Dr. Buttar and Robert talk about in this week’s show are:

More people died from opioid overdoses than by guns or car crashes in 2017, preliminary data shows – Preliminary data released by the Centers for Disease and Control paints a grim picture of America’s opioid crisis. Even as awareness has increased across the nation and opioid makers have vowed to stop pushing the drugs to physicians as they face lawsuits, estimates updated on Aug. 15 by the CDC show that there has been a 6.6 percent increase from 2016 – a year that had the highest opioid overdoses ever recorded. As the estimate stands today, that means more people died from opioid overdoses than by guns or car crashes in one year in the U.S. To put 2017 estimates into a bleaker perspective, overdose deaths from opioid prescriptions were fives times higher in 2016 than they were in 1999.

Antidepressants may counter effects of brain ageing – A commonly used medication Prozac can counter some of the effects of brain ageing, such as sensory and cognitive decline, an study suggests. The research published in provides fresh evidence that the decline in the capacity of brain cells to change – called ‘plasticity’ – rather than a decline in total cell number, may underlie some of the sensory and cognitive declines associated with normal brain , Scientists at (MIT) in the US showed that they could restore a significant degree of lost plasticity to the cells by treating mice with the commonly used medication fluoxetine, also known as Prozac. “Despite common belief, loss of neurons due to cell death is quite limited during normal and unlikely to account for age-related functional impairments,” researchers said.

California bill seeks to restrict restaurants serving kids sugary drinks – A California bill seeking to limit restaurants to serving children water or unflavored milk with their meals passed the Assembly this week and is now making its way to Gov. Jerry Brown’s (D) desk. The bill, aimed at combating childhood obesity, would not preclude children or parents from ordering alternatives, however, according to ABC 7. If Brown signs the bill into law, California would be the first state to have such a law, CBS Sacramento affiliate KOVR reportedAccording to CBS, several California cities have already passed similar restrictions, as have other cities across the U.S. The American Cancer Society was a fervent supporter of the bill, CBS reports. “Some of these kids are drinking up to three sodas a day. This is setting them up for tremendous cancer risks down the road,” Stephanie Winn of the American Cancer Society told KOVR. “Because now we know that 20 percent of all cancers are tied to being overweight.”

Why banning drive-throughs could make communities healthier – Noise and litter are two big reasons communities have banned drive-through windows in restaurants, but one University of Alberta researcher hopes it also helps put the brakes on unhealthy eating. As of 2016, 27 local governments across Canada, including two in Alberta, have either fully or partially banned  drive-throughs. And though the decisions were based on esthetic concerns, U of A  researcher Candace Nykiforuk said they also open the door for promoting public health as a larger issue in urban planning. “This is a real opportunity to encourage options for healthy eating,” said Nykiforuk, a professor in the School of Public Health. She conducted a study—the first of its kind in Canada—to identify  across the country that have adopted bylaws banning fast-serve windows. “We wanted to understand what policy levers could be used across the country to help people obtain better health,” said Nykiforuk. “If we know bylaws are put into place for other reasons, we also have an opportunity to assess them from a public health perspective.”
