CDC Expert Vaccine Court Witness Now Claims Vaccines Cause 
Autism – A pro-vaccine medical expert who has been utilized by the federal government to help defend liability cases in vaccine court caused controversy last week when he suggested that vaccines might cause autism. Pediatric neurologist Dr. Andrew Zimmerman has served as an expert medical witness for the government on many occasions. He has a history of sworn testimony citing that vaccines do not cause autism. But in a new sworn affidavit, Dr. Zimmerman seems to take a 180 turn on his prior admissions. He now claims that during a group of 5,000 vaccine-autism heard in court on June 15, 2007, he says he told DOJ lawyers during a side-bar that there are “exceptions in which vaccinations could cause autism.” “I explained that in a subset of children, vaccine-induced fever and immune stimulation did cause regressive brain disease with features of autism spectrum disorder,” Dr. Zimmerman now states. Dr. Zimmerman claims that DOJ lawyers quickly fired him when they realized his position supported even a remote possibility of a connection. This firing helped to conceal the exchange between Dr. Zimmerman and DOJ lawyers to the public at large. Additionally, it appears that the DOJ intentionally misrepresented Dr. Zimmerman’s opinions in future litigations.
Sugar’s sick secrets: How industry forces have manipulated science to downplay the harm – Walk into any grocery store, grab a few packaged products, and flip to the ingredients. You’ll likely spot added sugars — lots of them — provided you can discern their dizzying array of names: sucrose, dextrose, barley malt, agave nectar, high-fructose corn syrup, treacle, to list just a few. Why is our food saturated with all these sweeteners? When did they make their way into our yogurt, cereal, and oatmeal? How did they sneak into our salad dressing, soup, bread, lunch meat, pasta sauce, and pretzels? And, most crucially, what forces are responsible for this deluge, which is making some of us very sick? UCSF scientists are uncovering the answers to those questions. What they’re finding is that the food and beverage industry pushes sugary products, while obfuscating the significant health hazards of added sugars. UCSF researchers are scrutinizing this influence, scouring the research to better understand sugars’ link to disease, and fighting biased science by exposing industry tactics and educating the public.
94% of Americans who grew up during the era of leaded gasoline found to be lead poisoned and braindamaged -A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that 94 percent of Americans who were exposed to leaded gasoline in childhood may show signs of lower IQ scores and socioeconomic status in adulthood. Health experts pooled data from blood samples of than 500 participants who grew up in the era of leaded gasoline. Research showed that participants who had more than 10 micrograms of lead per deciliter of blood at age 11 had significant reductions in IQ points in adulthood. Researchers said participants who had high lead exposure exhibited IQs that were 4.25 points lower than less-exposed individuals at age 38. The study also found a dose-dependent effect of lead exposure on the participant’s IQ levels. According to the study, each 5-microgram increase in blood lead levels coincide with up to 1.5 IQ point loss in participants. Lead gasoline exposure in childhood was also associated with lower socioeconomic status in adulthood. Researchers said study participants who had more than 10 micrograms of lead in the blood obtained occupations with socioeconomic status four-tenths lower than those who had less exposure.
Forced Water Fluoride Poisoning: More People in U.S. Drink Fluoride-adulterated Water Than All Other Countries Combined – The United States stands almost entirely alone among developed nations in adding industrial silicofluorides to its drinking water—imposing the community-wide measure without informed consent. Globally, roughly 5% of the population consumes chemically fluoridated water, but more people in the U.S. drink fluoride-adulterated water than in all other countries combined. Within the U.S., just under a third (30%) of local water supplies are not fluoridated; these municipalities have either held the practice at bay since fluoridation’s inception or have won hard-fought battles to halt water fluoridation. The fluoride chemicals added to drinking water are unprocessed toxic waste products—captured pollutants from Florida’s phosphate fertilizer industry or unregulated chemical imports from China. The chemicals undergo no purification before being dumped into drinking water and often harbor significant levels of arsenic and other heavy metal contamination; one researcher describes this unavoidable contamination as a“regulatory blind spot that jeopardizes any safe use of fluoride additives.” Dozens of studies and reviews—including in top-tier journals such as The Lancet—have shown that fluoride is neurotoxic and lowers children’s IQ. Fluoride is also associated with a variety of other health risks in both children and adults.

Alzheimer’s hits more than just the memory; patients experience 
immune system dysfunction as well – Researchers have discovered that there is a link between inflammation biomarkers in both plasma and cerebrospinal fluid and markers of Alzheimer’s disease-associated pathology. This means that the disease does not only affect memory, but the immune system of patients as well. The study was conducted by a group of researchers from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, together with the University of Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and the University of California San Francisco Memory and Aging Center. Past research has suggested that pathology related to Alzheimer’s disease may develop before its clinical symptoms become evident, and that inflammation is a primary component of the disease. Moreover, links between the levels of inflammatory markers in cerebrospinal fluid and blood and mild cognitive impairment were revealed in previous studies. Furthermore, researchers discovered that increases in inflammatory markers may occur even decades before any symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease manifest. One in ten adults in US has food allergy, but nearly one in five think they do – Over 10 percent of adults in the U.S.—over 26 million—are estimated to have food allergy, according to a study published in JAMA Network Open that was led by Ruchi Gupta, MD, MPH, from Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and Northwestern University. However, researchers found that 19 percent of adults think they are currently food allergic, although their reported symptoms are inconsistent with a true food allergy, which can trigger a life-threatening reaction. Results are based on a nationally representative survey of over 40,000 adults. “While we found that one in 10 adults have food allergy, nearly twice as many adults think that they are allergic to foods, while their symptoms may suggest food intolerance or other food related conditions,” says lead author Ruchi Gupta, MD, MPH, from Lurie Children’s, who also is a Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “It is important to see a physician for appropriate testing and diagnosis before completely eliminating foods from the diet. If food allergy is confirmed, understanding the management is also critical, including recognizing symptoms of anaphylaxis and how and when to use epinephrine.”
A woman rejects parents anti-vaccination belief, gets vaccinated – A woman shared her first and only immunization record after her parents shunned childhood vaccinations. The Redditor headlined the photo: “My parents denied me vaccinations as a child. Today, I was finally able to take my health into my own hands!” The viral posting has 174,000 upvotes and more than 5,600 comments. “Thank you for doing this!” wrote one poster. “I have autoimmune disorders that make my vaccinations pretty much useless, and herd immunity allows me to survive without fearing these preventable diseases.” Wrote another: “Thank you for caring about the rest of humanity and congratulations on getting vaccinated. I hope the shots didn’t hurt too much and that you don’t have any crummy side effects.” The Redditor said that after three shots in each arm during a single visit, she was relaxing at home with her cat and playing video games. But she felt flu-like, with muscle aches and twitching. Her records show she received vaccines for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, tetanus, MMR (measles, mumps and rubella), chickenpox and human papillomavirus (HPV).
Could phosphate additives in foods make you less active? – A new study suggests that high levels of inorganic phosphate—a preservative widely used in certain sodas, packaged meats and other processed foods—may be a reason why the U.S. population isn’t as physically active as it used to be. Researchers from UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas looked at the effect of phosphate on both mice and humans and found each had similar associations with reduced activity level and increased sedentary time. Phosphate is a particle that comes from the mineral phosphorus, which the body needs to build healthy teeth and bones. It can be found naturally in some foods, including nuts, eggs and dairy products. But inorganic phosphate frequently gets added to certain foods to enhance appearance and flavor or increase its shelf life. An estimated 40 percent to 70 percent of top-selling grocery items, including cola drinks, prepared frozen foods, dry food mixes, packaged meat and bakery products contain phosphate additives, notes the study published Monday in the American Heart Association journal Circulation. As a result, up to 25 percent of U.S. adults consume threefold to fourfold the recommended daily allowance of phosphate on a regular basis.

New Flu Vaccine More Dangerous and Less Effective – Why does the
CDC continue to push ineffective vaccines to prevent the flu while staying silent on the benefits of natural medicine? Action Alert! The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently greenlit the nasal flu vaccine (FluMist) after advising the public to avoid that product for the last two years because it had not appeared to work as well against the H1N1 strain of the virus (even though the overall effectiveness of the flu vaccine in the 2017-2018 season was just 40%). It’s time for the CDC to stop guaranteeing profits for the vaccine industry and to start telling us the truth about how to really avoid the flu. What caused the CDC’s change of heart? According to some reports, members of the CDC were worried that sidelining the nasal vaccine would mean fewer people get vaccinated—demonstrating that the CDC is more concerned with vaccination rates than with safety. It must just be a coincidence that high vaccination rates mean higher profits for the vaccine industry. Is FluMist safe? According to the package insert, the nasal vaccine does not contain mercury or aluminum, two adjuvants that are particularly troubling, but it does contain monosodium glutamate (MSG) which has been linked with a long list of negative health effects including thyroid damage, kidney dysfunction, brain lesions, seizures, increased risk of infertility, diabetes, and endocrine disruption.
Is the Increase in the Childhood Vaccine Schedule Causing an Increase in Childhood Arthritis? – For people who think of arthritis as a disease of the elderly, learning that children also suffer from arthritic conditions may come as a shock. Across age groups, various forms of arthritis are a growing public health problem in the United States. New cases of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and other types of autoimmune arthritis in young Americans are two to three times higher than in Canada, with cases occurring within the wider context of proliferating pediatric autoimmune disorders. Over one four-year period (2001-2004), the number of ambulatory care visits for pediatric arthritis and other rheumatologic conditions increased by 50%. The medical community lumps childhood arthritic disorders under the broader umbrella of “juvenile rheumatoid arthritis” or “juvenile idiopathic arthritis” (JIA). “Idiopathic” means “no identifiable cause.” There has been a predictable rush to pinpoint predisposing genetic factors, even though most of the genetic variations identified in JIA “are shared across other autoimmune disorders.” Of more practical relevance, an emerging consensus points to environmental factors as major contributors to JIA, with childhood infections attracting particular attention. In light of the interest in infections, how do we explain the deafening silence about the possible role of vaccines as an autoimmune trigger for JIA, when the stock-in-trade of vaccination is the “mimicking [of] a natural infection”?
Gut immune cells reduce multiple sclerosis inflammation in study – The human intestine may contain key immune cells that decrease brain inflammation in people with multiple sclerosis, a study says. Researchers from the University of Toronto and the University of California San Francisco found that microbes known as plasma cells that live in the gut create Immunoglobulin A, or IgA, antibodies that can travel to the brain to suppress inflammation caused by MS. The findings were published Thursday in the journal Cell. “We already knew what was and was not working in the clinic,” Jen Gommerman, a professor of immunology at the University of Toronto and study senior author, said in a news release. “But here we’ve uncovered the molecular and cellular mechanism at play. It’s a kind of reverse translation approach, which highlights the importance of the gut-brain axis in MS and other autoimmune conditions.” While experimenting with lab mice and samples from human MS patients in a preclinical trial, the researchers observed IgA completely block MS inflammation.

Everything about Lyme disease is steeped in controversy. Now some
doctors are too afraid to treat patients – Bruce Shilton’s crippling fatigue left him bedridden for six months. Sue Faber was so forgetful, she couldn’t remember her daughters’ birthdates. And Andrea Smith’s relentless aches sent her into a deep depression. All three Canadians say they are struggling with a chronic form of Lyme disease and feel abandoned by Canada’s health-care system. The challenge for them, and other patients with Lyme, is that the medical community is divided on how best to diagnose and treat this controversial disease. On one side of this deep divide are mainstream doctors who say Lyme is easy to diagnose with standard testing, and the prevailing treatment — a short course of antibiotics — is enough to kill the bacteria that causes the disease. They believe patients who think they have chronic Lyme but have no evidence of infection are grappling with other illnesses and that treating for Lyme masks the real cause of their symptoms and does more harm than good.
‘Transmissible’ Alzheimer’s theory gains traction – Neuroscientists have amassed more evidence for the hypothesis that sticky proteins that are a hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases can be transferred between people under particular conditions — and cause new damage in a recipient’s brain. They stress that their research does not suggest that disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease are contagious, but it does raise concern that certain medical and surgical procedures pose a risk of transmitting such proteins between humans, which might lead to brain disease decades later. “The risk may turn out to be minor — but it needs to be investigated urgently,” says John Collinge, a neurologist at University College London who led the research, which is published in Nature1 on 13 December. The work follows up on a provocative study published by Collinge’s team in 20152. The researchers discovered extensive deposits of a protein called amyloid-beta during post-mortem studies of the brains of four people in the United Kingdom. They had been treated for short stature during childhood with growth-hormone preparations derived from the pituitary glands of thousands of donors after death.
Chronic fatigue: Overactive immune system ‘may trigger ME-like symptoms’ – An overactive immune system may help explain the cause of chronic fatigue syndrome, scientists from King’s College London have suggested. Many sufferers of CFS, or ME, say their condition began with a challenge to their immune system like an infection. The scientists studied 55 patients with Hepatitis C who were given a drug that causes a similar response to a virus. Eighteen of those patients had an overactive immune system and went on to develop CFS-like symptoms. Chronic fatigue syndrome is a long-term illness characterised by extreme tiredness. Scientists from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College recruited 55 patients who had hepatitis C. The standard treatment for hepatitis C is the drug interferon-alpha which challenges the immune system in the same way as a powerful infection. The team measured fatigue and immune markers before, during and after treatment, tracking which people developed the persistent CFS-like illness. In the 18 patients who developed CFS-like symptoms the team found a much stronger immune response to the medication. Significantly these patients also had an overactive immune system before the treatment started.
Parachutes do NOT save the lives of people who jump from aeroplanes, claim sarcastic scientists in a study designed to reveal how flawed ‘research’ can be – Parachutes do not save the lives of people who jump from aeroplanes, or so a study suggests. In a trial of 23 volunteers, all participants somehow survived being hurtled out of a plane – even those without parachutes. But the sarcastic scientists didn’t mention until 16 paragraphs into the study how the volunteers jumped a mere 0.6m off a stationary aircraft. The scientists argued their lighthearted trial highlights how misleading research can be. Writing in the Christmas edition of the British Medical Journal, they added accurate interpretation requires a ‘complete and critical appraisal of the study’. The ‘Look Before You Leap’ study was carried out by scientists at Harvard and led by associate professor of medicine Dr Robert Wayne Yeh. Although written in good fun, the scientists hope their findings will prompt people to read studies in full rather than taking a ‘cursory reading of the abstract’.

Could inflammation be the core cause of all chronic disease? – A lot of blame is passed around when 
talking about illness. You’ve probably heard a lot of common beliefs about what causes disease – some true and some a bit misinformed. For example, it’s often said that eating too much sugar causes diabetes, spending too much time in the sun causes skin cancer, and eating fatty foods will give you heart disease. The human body is complex, and it makes sense that different diseases will have different causes, but some experts believe that all diseases might begin with a single core cause: inflammation. This idea actually makes a lot of sense if you follow health news. We are constantly hearing that inflammation causes cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes, to name just a few. While these illnesses manifest themselves in different ways and affect different parts of the body, is it possible that a single problem could be responsible for so many different negative outcomes?

Study: 8 In 10 Adults Lie To Their Doctors About Their Health – Despite the guaranteed confidentiality and even though it could potentially put one’s health at risk, a new study finds that as many as eight in 10 people lie to their doctors about their health. Researchers conducted two surveys and discovered that about 80 percent of younger and middle-aged adults aren’t completely honest with their physicians, while about 60 percent of baby boomers misrepresent themselves. What’s more, about a third of respondents admitted they didn’t speak up when they didn’t agree with their doctor’s treatment plan or recommendation. “If patients are withholding information about what they’re eating, or whether they are taking their medication, it can have significant implications for their health. Especially if they have a chronic illness,” says the study’s first author, Andrea Gurmankin Levy, an associate professor in social sciences at Middlesex Community College in Connecticut, in a news release.
The farm-milk effect on trial – Erika von Mutius studies the impact of environmental factors in early childhood on allergy and asthma risk. She is now planning a large-scale trial of the beneficial role of unprocessed milk, which will involve thousands of children. Erika von Mutius is a pediatrician and immunologist, but she has also become well versed in many aspects of food processing. She and others have carried out a number of studies, which have shown that children who drink unprocessed cow’s milk are less likely to develop allergies and asthma than children who are given the sort of sterilized milk one finds in supermarkets. To develop a means of verifying this observation in a controlled trial, von Mutius has delved into the details of industrial milk processing. “Direct consumption of raw milk as a precaution against allergies cannot be recommended, as untreated milk may contain pathogenic microorganisms,” she points out. Mother of U.S. diplomat hurt in ‘health attack’ speaks out – The mother of
a U.S. diplomat who fell ill after suspected “health attacks” in China is speaking out, sharing her family’s harrowing story publicly in hopes of raising awareness about the potential danger facing American diplomats and other workers around the world. Laura Hughes, an Air Force veteran, says her daughter Catherine Werner is struggling with the effects of traumatic brain injury after experiencing strange sounds and sensations at her apartment in Guangzhou, where Werner was a foreign trade officer until being medevaced out earlier this year. She’s calling on the State Department to do more to solve the mystery that has eluded investigators since U.S. diplomats and spies starting getting sick in Cuba in late 2016. “I do not believe that our military, our diplomats around the world or here at home are safe,” Hughes says in an interview with NBC News Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent Andrea Mitchell. “Because this this weapon system is creating havoc.”
Autism prevalence now 1 in 40 US kids, study estimates – A survey of parents across the United States estimates that one in 40 children has autism spectrum disorder, according to a study published Monday in the journal Pediatrics. In other words, the condition was reported in 2.5% of children, representing an estimated 1.5 million kids ages 3 to 17. A report released this year by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated the prevalence at one in 59 children or about 1.7%, based on 2014 data. “Prevalence is not growing that rapidly, although the CDC’s data suggests it is still growing,” Thomas Frazier, chief science officer of the advocacy organization Autism Speaks, said in an emailed statement. He was not involved in the new report. “What is happening is that these studies use methods that are a bit more liberal and inclusive than the CDC’s methods,” Frazier said, adding that he prefers the CDC’s numbers but understands “that they are likely a bit conservative.”
College students fear mold in dorms led to Adenovirus death of University of Maryland freshman – University of Maryland students are growing increasingly concerned mold problems in their dorms may be linked to the death of a freshman who succumbed to the same rare virus that killed 11 children in New Jersey. Olivia Paregol, 18, was early in her first semester when she developed a cough, which later worsened to pneumonia. She died on November 18 at Johns Hopkins Hospital, from adenovirus, which causes respiratory problems. Paregol, from Howard County, Maryland, died less than three weeks after the school learned she had the illness. The university has since said five more students have illnesses tied to the same rare virus. Jessica Thompson told CBS News she and her roommate discovered mold on their shoes and clothes in their dorm back in August — and believes the fungus caused them to fall ill. “You can’t sleep at night because the pillow is right next to mold and you’re up all night coughing,” Thompson said. “We got to go home on the weekends and we would be totally fine at home, and we would come back and would be sniffling and coughing and then have headaches.”
Probiotics no help to young kids with stomach virus – Children with stomach viruses increasingly are given probiotics to ease symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea. But a major U.S. study led by Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis shows that a commonly used probiotic is not effective in improving symptoms in young patients with gastroenteritis. The findings are published Nov. 22 in The New England Journal of Medicine. While rarely fatal in the United States, gastroenteritis—frequently yet erroneously called “stomach flu”—accounts for 1.7 million pediatric emergency room visits and more than 70,000 hospitalizations each year. The study, involving nearly 1,000 children ages 3 months to 4 years, provides evidence against the popular and costly use of probiotics—live microorganisms believed to restore the balance of intestinal bacteria and boost the immune system. “Probiotics have become an increasingly popular way to treat children experiencing acute gastroenteritis,” said the study’s lead author, David Schnadower, MD, who conducted the research as a Washington University professor of pediatrics and a physician at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. “Some smaller studies have indicated that probiotics may help, however, such studies had a number of limitations. We sought to provide independent and conclusive evidence for or against probiotic use in infants and toddlers with acute gastroenteritis.”
Promising Alzheimer’s vaccine draws closer to human trials, researcher – A DNA vaccine shown to reduce the accumulation of toxic proteins associated with Alzheimer’s disease in mice could be moving closer to human trial, according to researchers University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. A team with the center’s Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute tested the vaccine, which researchers say prompts an immune response that reduces the build-up of toxic tau and beta-amyloid proteins. Their findings were published this week in the medical journal Alzheimer’s Research and Therapy. “This study is the culmination of a decade of research that has repeatedly demonstrated that this vaccine can effectively and safely target in animal models what we think may cause Alzheimer’s disease,” Dr. Roger Rosenburg, founding director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Center at UT Southwestern, said in a news release. “I believe we’re getting close to testing this therapy in people.”

Study links autistic children back to mothers who had chronic respiratory ailments, inflammation during pregnancy – Clinical trials have shown an association between the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and maternal immune activation (MIA), an active immune response after an infectious exposure during pregnancy, but this study is the first one to examine its link to an increase in behavioral abnormalities in children. The connection between ASD and MIA is still largely unknown but research suggests than an immune system-mediated subtype of ASD is triggered by changes in the cellular activity such as antibody levels in the mother and/or child. Animal models have revealed that MIA is a risk factor in developmental abnormalities in the offspring. ASD is a neurological and developmental disorder that manifests in early childhood and lasts through a person’s adult life. It can have a range of symptoms but mainly affects interaction and communication skills. A person with ASD may have difficulty expressing themselves and talking with others. They also show repetitive behaviors and limited interests.
Does Air Pollution Raise Autism Risk? – Traffic-related air pollution may play a role in development of autism, new research suggests. A Canadian study found that exposure to a common air pollutant during pregnancy was tied to higher odds of a child being diagnosed with autism by age 5. That pollutant, nitric oxide, is associated with traffic pollution, the researchers noted. “There is no cure for autism spectrum disorder, so prevention has an important role to play,” said lead researcher Lief Pagalan. “Avoiding air pollution is not easy because it’s all around us, and we should see this as a broader public health issue,” said Pagalan, of the faculty of health sciences at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. “In the long term, it’s about bringing down air pollution levels for everyone.” About one in 59 American children has some form of autism, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, and include difficulties with socialization and communication.
Use of penicillin early in life, even in low doses, affects the gut microbiome, contributing to braininflammation and changes in behavior – It is truly unavoidable to catch a cold or contract a disease, especially with today’s lifestyle trends and medical misinformation. A lot of the medicine we use to treat our health conditions may actually cause more harm than good. A St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and McMaster University joint study found that low doses of penicillin administered to pregnant mice and their young results in behavioral changes that have long-term effects. The study, which was published in Nature Communications, reports that the behavioral changes noted in the mice included elevated levels of aggression, characteristic neurochemical changes in the brain, and imbalance in the gut microbiome of the mice. On the bright side, giving the mice a lactobacillus strain of bacteria managed to prevent the effects of the administered penicillin.

Autism is associated with zinc deficiency in early development—now a
study links the two – The emergence of autism in children has not only been linked to genes encoding synaptic proteins—among others—but also environmental insults such as zinc deficiency. Although it is unclear whether zinc deficiency contributes to autism, scientists have now defined in detail a possible mechanistic link. Their research shows how zinc shapes the connections or ‘synapses’ between brain cells that form during early development, via a complex molecular machinery encoded by autism risk genes. Published in Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience, the findings do not directly support zinc supplementation for the prevention of autism—but extend our understanding of its underlying developmental abnormalities, towards an eventual treatment.
Leading researchers call for a ban on widely used insecticides: Use of organophosphates has lessened, but risks to early brain development still too high – Public health experts have found there is sufficient evidence that prenatal exposure to widely used insecticides known as organophosphates puts children at risk for neurodevelopmental disorders. In a scientific review and call to action published in PLOS Medicine, the researchers call for immediate government intervention to phase out all organophosphates. “There is compelling evidence that exposure of pregnant women to very low levels of organophosphate pesticides is associated with lower IQs and difficulties with learning, memory or attention in their children,” said lead author Irva Hertz-Picciotto, professor of public health sciences, director of the UC Davis Environmental Health Sciences Center and researcher with the UC Davis MIND Institute.
Fat-clogged cells explain why obesity can cause cancer – A type of cell the body uses to destroy cancerous tissue gets clogged by fat and stops working, the team, from Trinity College Dublin, found. Obesity is the biggest preventable cause of cancer in the UK after smoking, Cancer Research UK says. And more than one in 20 cancer cases – about 22,800 cases each year in the UK – are caused by excess body weight. Experts already suspected fat sent signals to the body that could both damage cells, leading to cancer, and increase the number of them. Now, the Trinity scientists have been able to show, in Nature Immunology journal, how the body’s cancer-fighting cells get clogged by fat. And they hope to be able to find drug treatments that could restore these “natural killer” cells’ fighting abilities.
Coronary calcium levels a better predictor of patients at risk for coronary heart disease – A new study presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Session conference found that testing a patient’s coronary calcium levels is a better predictor of blocked coronary arteries at risk for a heart attack and the need for revascularization than standard risk-assessment equations used in medical practice today. “With coronary calcium, we’re looking at a marker indicating the actual presence of anatomic disease—we’re not just looking at probabilities of disease based on a patient’s standard risk factors,” said Jeffrey L. Anderson, MD, a cardiologist and cardiovascular researcher at the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute in Salt Lake City. “The risk factors are worth knowing, but they don’t tell whether or not you actually have the disease.” Cardiovascular disease remains the greatest cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States, and determining who’s most at risk continues to be suboptimal, said Dr. Anderson.
Most Child Tonsillectomies Unnecessary, Study Finds – Seven out of 8 children in the United Kingdom who have their tonsils removed are unlikely to benefit from the surgery, a study found. But many children who could benefit from a tonsillectomy are not having the surgery, say researchers from the University of Birmingham. Recurrent or chronic sore throat is the most common reason for getting a tonsillectomy. Evidence shows that the surgery results in modest, short-term reductions in recurring, severe sore throats in children aged 3 to 15, but not in those with milder symptoms. U.K. guidelines say a child should have a tonsillectomy if he or she has had seven or more sore throats in a year, five or more in each of the previous 2 years, or three or more in each of the last 3 years. Plus, the children with sore throats should also have swollen lymph nodes, an abscess behind the tonsil, fevers, or strep throat.

Doctors’ son died 10 days before flu shot appointment. Now, they want to save your child – Two physicians who lost their young son to the flu last year want parents to listen to their message, born of great grief and suffering: Get your child a flu shot. Drs. Laura and Anthony Sidari’s 4-year-old son, Leon, did not get the flu vaccine last year. He died on Christmas Day, less than 48 hours after he started feeling sick. “I didn’t know a condition could kill a child that quickly who had been previously healthy,” said Laura, a psychiatrist. “This has been a hard haul for us, and we’re very private people, but we’re trying to help other families.” Leon was one of 185 US children who died in the 2017-18 flu season, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — a historic high. Approximately 80% of those children had not received a flu shot, according to the CDC. Laura and Anthony, a rheumatologist, had wanted to get Leon and his 2-year-old brother flu shots at a pharmacy. They lived in Texas, where state law prohibits pharmacists from vaccinating anyone under the age of 7.
Lead, mercury exposure raises cholesterol levels – Higher levels of lead and other heavy metals detected in the blood was associated with increased levels of lower density lipoprotein (LDL—bad cholesterol) and total cholesterol, according to preliminary research to be presented in Chicago at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2018. Researchers reviewed information from NHANES 2009-2012, a national representative database which includes cholesterol levels and blood levels of heavy metals among U.S. adults. They found a notable difference between those with the least blood levels of heavy metal and those with the most, with LDL becoming progressively higher as lead levels increased.
Compared with those who had the lowest levels of a metal, those with the highest:
- had 56 percent greater odds of having higher total cholesterol if they have the highest level of lead;
- were 73 percent more likely to have higher total cholesterol if they had the highest levels of mercury in their blood;
- had 41 percent higher risk of elevated total cholesterol if their cadmium levels were in the highest levels; and
- were 22 percent more likely to have higher bad cholesterol if they were in the highest lead levels.
In addition, mercury levels increased the odds for higher LDL by 23 percent among those who fell in the middle for their heavy metal levels, compared to those with the lowest level. The rise in cholesterol seen with increasing heavy metal levels in the blood might have cardiovascular consequences in people exposed to heavy metals, such as in areas with disaster water crises. This suggests the need for screening for heavy metals as a risk for high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease, the authors noted.
Skin cancer deaths rates soar, mostly for men: study – Skin cancer deaths among men have soared in wealthy nations since 1985, with mortality rates among women rising more slowly or even declining, researchers told a medical conference in Glasgow Sunday. Reasons for the discrepancy between sexes are unclear but evidence suggests men are “less likely to protect themselves from the sun” or heed public health warnings, lead researcher Dorothy Yang, a doctor at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust in London, told AFP. More than 90 percent of melanoma cancers are caused by skin cell damage from exposure to the sun or other sources of ultraviolet (UV) radiation such as tanning beds, according to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC). In eight of 18 countries examined, men’s skin cancer death rates increased over three decades by at least 50 percent. In two nations — Ireland and Croatia — it roughly doubled. Also seeing a sharp jump were Spain and Britain (70 percent), The Netherlands (60 percent), as well as France and Belgium (50 percent).
Type 2 diabetes affecting younger, leaner population – It is well recognized that increasing rates of Type 2 diabetes are mainly driven by obesity and lifestyle factors. But that’s not the whole story. Genetics and epigenetics – changes in gene expression – also play an important role. We are starting to see an increase in Type 2 diabetes in leaner people at a much younger age than usually associated with the disease. This means in addition to focusing on good diet and exercise, we need better awareness of groups most at risk of Type 2 diabetes. These include many ethnic groups, women with a history of gestational diabetes and people with a family history of diabetes. In my clinical practice, I have seen teenagers and even children as young as seven, as well as younger patients of Asian, African and Middle Eastern origin with Type 2 diabetes. Among indigenous people in Central Australia, rates of diabetes are some of the worst in the world, at around three times that of non-indigenous people. Studies in some remote communities suggest a prevalence of Type 2 diabetes of up to 30 percent, compared to a rate of around 5 percent in the non-indigenous population.

Hi RSB, Super Don, and Dr. Buttar, My daughter has been getting occasional nosebleeds since she was about 4 years old. She just turned 13 and the frequency of the bleeds has really ramped up. She has huge worm like clots that either come out her nostrils or go down her throat. I’ve inquired about this during her physical exams, but the only advice we’ve gotten is to use a humidifier and to drink more water. We live in Massachusetts and the heaters are going on and I know that can be a trigger, but the frequency and the amount of blood is disturbing me. I was hoping to get your perspectives on this before I take her in to be looked at. I want to be informed on this so they don’t push us into anything drastic. I don’t know what to expect. I know you haven’t physically seen her, but what do you think?

Study questions certain treatments for diabetic patients at high risk for heart disease – New research suggests that attempts to normalize blood pressure, and cholesterol may have negative long-term effects on kidney health in adults with type 2 diabetes who are at high risk for cardiovascular disease. The results appear in an upcoming issue of the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN) and will be presented at ASN Kidney Week 2018. Type 2 diabetes greatly increases the risk for both cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease. Therefore, it is especially important to protect the heart and kidney health of patients with type 2 diabetes. In these patients, aggressive control of blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol has resulted in conflicting short-term effects on kidney health. To determine the long-term kidney effects of these interventions, Amy K. Mottl, MD (University of North Carolina Kidney Center), Timothy E. Craven, MSPH (Wake Forest School of Medicine), and their colleagues examined information on more than 10,000 participants in ACCORDION, which is an extension phase of the ACCORD trial, a multifactorial intervention study in people with type 2 diabetes at high risk for cardiovascular disease.
Drugs’ Side Effects in Lungs More Widespread Than Thought – A systematic review of research has revealed that the toxic effects on the lung of drugs commonly taken to treat a range of common conditions is much more widespread than thought. Though the 27 drugs treating a range of conditions including arthritis, cancer and the heart are successful for most patients, doctors, say the team, need to be more aware of the potential risks to their respiratory systems. The research was carried out by academics at the Universities of Manchester, Leeds, and Sheffield as well as clinicians at NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre, Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC). The study, which looked at 6,200 patients’ data from 156 papers is published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine. The team are part of a €24 million project funded by the European Union and the European pharmaceutical industry’s Innovative Medicine Initiative which is developing imaging techniques for the management of drug-induced interstitial lung disease (DIILD). It is co-led by EORTC and Bioxydyn Ltd, a University of Manchester spin-out company. Though DIILD can cause difficulty breathing, inflammation and fibrosis, the risk sometimes only becomes apparent after the drugs have been in use for some years.
