Combination Vaccines and Febrile Seizures: Should Parents be Concerned? The childhood immunization schedule recommended by The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), calls for 50 doses of 14 vaccines by a child’s 6th birthday. These vaccines are delivered in a series of shots, some of which are multiple vaccines combined into one injection. In the U.S., there is an ongoing trend to increase the number of recommended vaccines on the CDC childhood immunization schedule as well as to increase manufacturing of combination vaccines. In fact, the FDA just approved a new hexavalent (6:1) combination vaccinemanufactured in partnership between Sanofi Pasteur and Merck for children between 6 weeks and 4 years of age. This combination vaccine includes diptheria, pertussis, tetanus, hepatitis B, poliomyelitis and invasive haemophilus influenza type B. but will still require an additional DTaP vaccine to complete the series.
Researchers working on vaccine that could prevent common cold A cure for one of the leading causes of the common cold and other respiratory diseases may not be far in the future. Researchers at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh are working on a vaccine for Human metapneumovirus or MPV. The virus can cause respiratory infections in children and infects everyone by age 5. “If one of your kids gets a cold around February or March and they bring it home to you,” Dr. John Williams said, “that could likely be MPV or metapneumovirus.” Williams is developing the vaccine. He’s been studying MPV since it was discovered in 2001, but said it’s been around for hundreds of years and can be deadly. “Although most people who get MPV are just going to have a cold,” Williams said, “plenty of people – kids and adults – are going to be hospitalized every year and some of them are going to die.” That’s why health experts, including pediatrician Dr. Jennifer Preiss, believe developing a vaccine is so crucial. “That is huge,” Dr. Preiss said. “Less hospitalizations, less mortality and morbidity.”
A Mother’s Exposure to Pesticides During Pregnancy May Raise Children’s Autism Risk In one of the largest studies looking at the potential effects of pesticide exposure on still-developing fetuses and newborns, scientists found that exposure to the most commonly used pesticides was linked to higher risk of autism spectrum disorder. Led by Ondine von Ehrenstein, associate professor in the Fielding School of Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles, the researchers analyzed autism registry data in California along with data on pesticide spraying in the state. They published their findings in the BMJ. Overall, the study included nearly 38,000 people, with 2,961 cases of autism. The scientists found that women who were pregnant and who lived within a 2,000 meter radius of a highly sprayed area were anywhere from 10% to 16% more likely to have children diagnosed with autism than women who lived in places farther away from sprayed areas.
ADHD drugs can lead to psychosis in some according to new study A new study on the effects of medication prescribed to those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder suggests that teens and young people could face an increased risk of psychosis with certain drugs. The study, conducted by researchers at McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School, looked at teens and young people who had recently begun taking two classes of drugs – amphetamines (marketed as Adderall and Vyvanse) and methylphenidates (marketed as Ritalin or Concerta) – used to treat ADHD. The study showed that while the chance of developing psychosis – a condition that affects the mind and causes a person to lose contact with reality – is low, there is an increased risk of developing the disorder in patients taking the amphetamines.

FDA medical adviser: ‘Congress is owned by pharma’ Pharmaceutical companies are under the spotlight with congressional hearings on the cost of drug prices and allegations of the industry’s role in the opioid crisis. Dr. Raeford Brown, a pediatric anesthesia specialist at the UK Kentucky Children’s Hospital and chair of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Committee on Analgesics and Anesthetics, has been openly critical of big pharma and the lack of proper oversight from the FDA. Despite many politicians, particularly declared presidential candidates, beginning to speak out against big pharma, Brown does not think that anything will come out of it “because Congress is owned by pharma.” “The pharmaceutical industry pours millions of dollars into the legislative branch every single year,” he told Yahoo Finance. “In 2016, they put $100 million into the elections. That’s a ton of money.”
Mumps-like Parotitis Strikes Crew of U.S. Navy Ship The U.S. Navy’s amphibious warship the U.S.S. Fort McHenry (LSD-43) has been quarantined at sea for more than two months due to an outbreak of a mumps-like disease known as parotitis among its crew. CNN has reported that 25 sailors and Marines aboard the ship have been diagnosed with parotitis, which is characterized by inflammation and swelling of one or both of the salivary glands on the insides of the cheeks known as parotid glands. The Fort McHenry, a Whidbey Island-class dock landing ship, which is currently deployed in the Persian Gulf, has a crew complement of 703 military personnel, including elements of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit. Parotitis can be caused by either a viral or bacterial infection, but in this case it appears that the infection was caused by a virus. A common cause of parotitis that is unrelated to either a virus or bacteria is dehydration. The first case of the illness aboard the Fort McHenry occurred on Dec. 22, 2018 and the most recent case on Mar. 9, 2019.
Researchers Claim Arthritis Vaccine Near Scientists believe they’ve discovered an arthritis vaccine. The vaccine is said to treat “daily agony” pain bouts experienced by arthritis sufferers. They believe it may replace the need for painkillers, a sect of pharmaceutical medications that is now under heavy government scrutiny. According to Daily Mail, Oxford University researchers say the vaccine blocks nerve growth factor, which is the cause of arthritic pain. Their studies, according to the researchers, found that the vaccine caused the immune system to work against NGF in mice. The United States has 30 million osteoarthritis sufferers. The condition has no cure. Xrays indicate that of people over 65, over half have some instance of arthritis. Researchers claim that the vaccine “visibly reduced pain” in mice. The vaccine is named CuMVttNGF. The vaccine would replace the highly-criticized painkiller prescriptions. For Pharma, a vaccine for arthritis is a hedged bet on intensifying opioid scrutiny.
Deaths from dementia have more than doubled in US, report says Dementia not only affects memory and quality of life, it can be fatal. A report released Thursday by the National Center for Health Statistics shows that the rate of Americans who died from dementia has more than doubled from 30.5 deaths per 100,000 people in 2000 to 66.7 in 2017. The term dementia encompasses disease states that impair memory and result in a decline in cognitive function. These conditions seem to be affecting more of the population as it is expected to affect 14 million people age 65 and older by 2060, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Ellen Kramarow, lead author of the new report and a health statistician for the Aging and Chronic Disease Statistics Branch for the National Center for Health Statistics, part of the CDC, explained that one cause of the rising number of deaths due to dementia in the United States is most likely because of the aging population. “If people live longer, they don’t die of other causes, so they live to the point where the risk for dementia is higher,” she said.

World must prepare for inevitable next flu pandemic, WHO says – The world will inevitably face another pandemic of flu and needs to prepare for the potential devastation that could cause, and not underestimate the risks, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday. Outlining a global plan to fight the viral disease and get ahead of a potential global outbreak, the WHO said the next influenza pandemic “is a matter of when, not if”. “The threat of pandemic influenza is ever-present,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO’s director-general, said in a statement. “We must be vigilant and prepared – the cost of a major influenza outbreak will far outweigh the price of prevention.” The world’s last flu pandemic was caused by the H1N1 virus, which spread around the world in 2009 and 2010. Studies of that pandemic found that at least one in five people worldwide were infected in the first year, and the death rate was 0.02 percent. Global health experts and the WHO warn there is a risk that a more deadly flu virus will one day jump from animals to people, mutate and infect many hundreds of thousands of people.
Is prediabetes really a medical condition that needs attention? – Charles Piller, a contributing correspondent for Science, has published a news article in the journal questioning the medical soundness of referring to prediabetes as a condition that needs treatment. In his article, he points out that there is little to no scientific evidence linking prediabetes to diabetes. He also notes that prediabetes has not been found to cause health problems in people who have been so diagnosed. Piller outlines the history of the coinage of the term, relating that it came about as representatives from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and other diabetes-related institutions met to discuss the possible implications of patients with above-normal levels of glucose in their blood. The fear was that prediabetes would lead to full-blown diabetes and thus there existed an opportunity to prevent the disease if prediabetes could be treated.
The largest ever study has shown the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine is linked to lower rates of autism – The measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine isn’t associated with an increased risk of autism even among kids who are at high risk because they have a sibling with the disorder, a Danish study suggests. Concerns about a potential link between the MMR vaccine and autism have persisted for two decades, since a controversial and ultimately retracted 1998 paper claimed there was a direct connection. Even though subsequent studies haven’t tied inoculation to autism, fear about the risk has weighed on parents so much in several communities across Europe and the U.S. that vaccination rates have been too low to prevent a spate of measles outbreaks. In the current study, researchers examined data on 657,461 children. During this time, 6,517 kids were diagnosed with autism. Kids who got the MMR vaccine were seven per cent less likely to develop autism than children who didn’t get vaccinated, researchers report in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
Younger adults with inflammatory disease at greater risk of anxiety and depression – new study – The often painful and stigmatising nature of chronic inflammatory disorders, such as psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis, can take a toll on people’s quality of life, ultimately leading to anxiety and depression. But could depression be a consequence of inflammatory disease rather than just a reaction to it? A growing number of studies show that the persistent inflammation that is common to chronic inflammatory disorders may alter the brain’s structure and function. Earlier research also found an increased risk of depressive symptoms for certain inflammatory disorders, such as psoriasis. What has been lacking, until now, are studies that look at depression and anxiety across different inflammatory disorders. Earlier studies have also mainly focused on older adults.

Measles: The New Red Scare – Fear. It’s a natural and primal human emotion.
While human instinct is exceptional in evaluating and reacting to a natural personal risk, as in facing a predator, humans are terrible at assessing modern risks. According to Psychology Today this is because our ancestors were programmed to quickly react and respond to a situation before it is even consciously perceived. Our reactions aren’t based in logic and statistics, but in lightning fast primitive responses. Threats such as venomous spiders and snakes cause an out-of-proportion fear compared with the more likely threat of being killed in a car crash. The low risk of a being killed in a shark attack evokes more terror than the much greater chance of dying from a prescription drug.(Spider and snake bites kill approximately 13 people a year and shark attacks kill 1 person every 2 years in the United States; there were 32,719 deaths in motor vehicle crashes in 2013 and 38,329 people died from a drug overdose in 2010 in the United States.)

I was listening to your show from Monday and you both were talking about eliminating waste from your mouth to Uranus. LOL My fiance has always had problems eliminating waste. (Going #2). She even said that it has been going on for as long as she can remember. She is on her 3rd days without going. She takes no prescription drugs, we eat organic as much as we can, drink water from a Berkey, etc, is there a supplement or anything else that she can do to help this issue?

Chemical pollutants in the home degrade fertility in both men and dogs, study finds – New research by scientists at the University of Nottingham suggests that environmental contaminants found in the home and diet have the same adverse effects on male fertility in both humans and in domestic dogs. There has been increasing concern over declining human male fertility in recent decades with studies showing a 50% global reduction in sperm quality in the past 80 years. A previous study by the Nottingham experts showed that sperm quality in domestic dogs has also sharply declined, raising the question of whether modern day chemicals in the home environment could be at least partly to blame. In a new paper published in Scientific Reports, the Nottingham team set out to test the effects of two specific man-made chemicals namely the common plasticizer DEHP, widely abundant in the home (e.g. carpets, flooring, upholstery, clothes, wires, toys) and the persistent industrial chemical polychlorinated biphenyl 153, which although banned globally, remains widely detectable in the environment including food.
Is nutritional psychiatry the future of mental health treatments? – Mental health problems are notoriously tricky to treat, with many sufferers reporting that they’ve gone through several different psychiatrists and medications before striking on something that manages their condition to at least some degree. Bacteria In Our Guts May Be Communicating With Our DNA, Study Shows – Bacteria in the gut may be
able to boss around the genes found in their hosts – at least, in worms. According to a new study published in the journal Cell, trillions of bacteria found within the average gut may be practicing a sort of “interspecies communication” that transcends language. Gut bacteria secrete a molecule called nitric oxide. In an attempt to understand how bacteria communicate with its host, researchers tracked nitric oxide levels inside tiny worms (C. elegans). They found that this molecule is capable of attaching to thousands of host proteins and, as such, changed the worm’s ability to regulate its own gene expression. And if it works in worms, there is a possibility similar activity could be happening within our own stomachs. Previous research has shown that nitric oxide attaches to human proteins in a process known as S-nitrosylation, which has been linked to diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, asthma, and cancer, among others.
States Move to Mandate Deadly HPV Gardasil Vaccine for Children – Pharmaceutical giant Merck’s political influence is now reaching beyond the CDC and federal government, and moving into state legislatures as several states have introduced bills to mandate Merck’s Gardasil HPV vaccine for children. The HPV vaccine, which only applies to sexually active people, is not currently part of the CDC vaccine schedule, therefore separate legislation is needed to compel children to receive it. What is withheld from the public is the fact that Merck is fighting fraud cases in U.S. courts and multiple other lawsuits around the world concerning the Gardasil vaccine, as the vaccine continues to kill and injure, primarily teenage girls. Here are the states currently considering new legislation to mandate the Gardasil vaccine against parental choice. (Note: Merck’s Gardasil vaccine is the only HPV vaccine currently licensed in the U.S. So when you read “HPV Vaccine,” that currently means Gardasil.)
Connecticut: SB 858 – Allows for administration of HPV and Hepatitis B Vaccines to minors without parental consent. Public Hearing 02/25/19.
Florida: HB 245/SB 356 – Mandates HPV Vaccine for children as a requirement for school attendance.
Illinois: SB 1659 – Mandates HPV Vaccines for 6th grade students.
Massachusetts: SD 1520 – Mandates HPV Vaccine for school children.
New Jersey: A1847 – Mandates HPV Vaccines for students in grades six through 12.
New York: (2 bills) A973/S3899 – Allows health care practitioners to administer HPV/Hep B Vaccines to minors without parental consent. And S298 – Mandate the HPV Vaccine to the current list of vaccines required for children.

ome personal beliefs and morals may stem from genetics – A new baby is often welcomed with speculation aboutwhether they got their eyes and nose from mom or dad, but researchers say it may be possible for children to inherit their parents’ moral characteristics, as well. The researchers found that while parents can help encourage their children to develop into responsible, conscientious adults, there is an underlying genetic factor that influences these traits, as well. Amanda Ramos, Training Interdisciplinary Educational Scientists fellow at Penn State, said she hopes the study can help start a conversation about how and why these characteristics—referred to as “virtuous character”—develop. “A lot of studies have shown a link between parenting and these virtuous traits, but they haven’t looked at the genetic component,” Ramos said. “I thought that was a missed opportunity because parents also share their genes with their children, and what we think is parents influencing and teaching their children these characteristics may actually be due, at least in part, to genetics.”

Doctors’ dilemma: To see or not to see unvaccinated kids – To vaccinate or not to vaccinate. It’s an issue that surfaces again and again, despite evidence on how effective immunizations are in disease control. The use of vaccines worldwide has eradicated smallpox and done nearly the same for polio. In the United States, diphtheria, bacterial influenza, measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus and others also are close to the brink of eradication. Yet, there’s been a significant outbreak of measles this year in Oregon and Washington state, with cases reported so far in 2019 in a total of 10 states. The Centers for Disease Control attributes continuing outbreaks to an increase in the number of travelers who get measles abroad and bring it back the United States, spreading it in pockets of unvaccinated people.

nflammation in midlife hastens cognitive decline – The average age of the population of the United States is gradually increasing, so conditions of old age are moving into the spotlight. Growing older is associated with a progressive decline in average thinking abilities. However, it may only affect some people very mildly, while other individuals can develop significant cognitive deficits. Understanding the risk factors involved is of growing importance. We already know some risk factors; for instance, lower levels of physical activity, smoking, and obesity appear to increase the rate of decline. Recently, some scientists have turned their attention toward the potential role of inflammation.

I’ve been quite ill for the past year, I’ve had many different gut issues but no solid diagnosis. I had one red herring of mycobacterium chelonae appear in a culture a few months back, upon further investigation via bronchoscopy we failed to find the same result. I’ve been told from a friend that given my symptoms intestinal tuberculosis could be a possibility, (rare but not unheard of, symptoms match up and along with the previous mycobacterium culture could be a bit to coincidental to forget) how could I go about treating this if this really was my issue??

Diabetes and Alzheimer’s: What’s the link? – Although the conditions are seemingly independent of each other, earlier studies have found that people with type 2 diabetes are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease. However, the mechanisms behind this relationship have remained hidden. A recent study investigated the impact of blocking insulin receptors and insulin-like growth factor (IGF1) receptors in mouse models. The work was carried out at the Joslin Diabetes Center, affiliated with Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. Is exposure to lead a risk for arthritis? Study finds correlation 
between lead in the blood and knee osteoarthritis – Knee osteoarthritis is a menace that plagues millions of people every single day. Since it’s something that affects so many people’s lives, scientists and other experts are always on the lookout for new and improved ways of administering treatment than currently known and available methods. One group of Egyptian researchers has now contributed their part to the cumulative human effort to handle the condition by conducting a study, which looks at the link between blood lead levels and knee osteoarthritis in patients. In this study, which was published in the International Journal of Clinical Rheumatology, the researchers noted that lead is a common ubiquitous environmental pollutant, and that it may be one of the environmental factors affecting the increasing prevalence of knee osteoarthritis in young adult patients.

I have 5 children. After the first one nearly died from a MMR vaccine I educated myself (early 80’s) and none of my other children were ever immunized and are healthy adults. Do you have proof that the children who are not immunized in Los Alamos schools are actually the children of scientists? Also, isn’t 2.3% (or whatever is stated) an extremely low percentile? That implies 97.7% compliance, which is way above norm. This WOULD be a fantastic reference I would love to use, but cannot do it with only the claim made.

“Top gov’t. scientists say no to vaccines for their kids, Los Alamos, New Mexico” – The tally is in, and the major New Mexico school district with the largest percentage of students opting out of vaccinations against contagious diseases is not in one of the state’s known hotbeds for crystal gazing, cradle therapy or psychic readings. Nope, the highest percentage of vaccine exemptions is in New Mexico’s, and one of the world’s, science centers: Los Alamos. According to a recent report by the state Department of Health, 2.3 percent of students in the Los Alamos Public Schools have exemptions from having to get vaccinations.
Silver Nanoparticles Kill Colon Cancer Cells: 12 Studies – According to the CDC, “Of cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. It is the third most common cancer in men and in women.” Indeed, there are as many as 135,430 new cases of colon and rectal cancers in the U.S. each year, resulting in 50,260 deaths. One in every 20 people will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer (colon or rectal cancer). New Studies Demonstrate Silver Kills Colon Cancer Cells Thankfully, there have been a growing number of in vitro (i.e., “test tube”) clinical studies over the last 10 years using various forms of antimicrobial silver against colon cancer cells, each of which have demonstrated silver’s effectiveness against the cancer cells. We’ll take a quick look at twelve of these studies, below.
Nearly 1 in 7 US kids and teens have a mental health condition — half go untreated, study says – Half of children with a mental health condition in the United States go without treatment, according to a study published Monday in the journal JAMA Pediatrics. The researchers analyzed data from the 2016 National Survey of Children’s Health, a nationwide survey administered to parents of children and teens. Of the 46.6 million children ages 6 through 18 whose parents completed the survey, 7.7 million had at least one mental health condition — such as depression, anxiety or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder — and only half received treatment or counseling from a mental health provider in the 12 months prior to the survey. The number of children with a mental health condition varied widely from state to state. In Hawaii, for example, 7.6% of children had one of the conditions, compared with 27.2% in Maine. The number of children with a diagnosed mental health condition who weren’t treated by a provider also ranged widely, from 29.5% in the District of Columbia to 72.2% in North Carolina.

– World Cancer Day was born on the 4 February 2000 at theWorld Summit Against Cancer for the New Millennium in Paris. The Paris Charter aims to promote research, prevent cancer, improve patient services, raise awareness and mobilise the global community to make progress against cancer, and includes the adoption of World Cancer Day.
For millennials, cancers fueled by obesity are on rise, study says – Cancers fueled by obesity are on the rise among young adults in the United States and appearing at increasingly younger ages, according to an analysis released Monday by the American Cancer Society. The study, published in The Lancet Public Health, examined data on 12 obesity-related cancers between 1995 and 2014, as well as 18 common cancers not associated with weight. They found a disturbing trend among adults age 24 to 49. “The risk of cancer is increasing in young adults for half of the obesity-related cancers, with the increase steeper in progressively younger ages,” said co-author Ahmedin Jemal, who is the vice president of the Surveillance and Health Services Research Program for the American Cancer Society. The risk, he said, was increasing in a stepwise manner in successively younger people.
Bill Gates: My ‘best investment’ turned $10 billion into $200 billion worth of economic benefit – Investing in global health organizations aimed at increasing access to vaccines created a 20-to-1 return in economic benefit, billionaire Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates told CNBC on Wednesday. Over the past two decades, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has donated “a bit more than $10 billion” into mainly three groups: the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. “We feel there’s been over a 20-to-1 return,” yielding $200 billion over those 20 or so years, Gates told CNBC’s Becky Quick on “Squawk Box” from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “Helping young children live, get the right nutrition, contribute to their countries — that has a payback that goes beyond any typical financial return.”
Many Children Are Overdoing It on the Toothpaste, C.D.C. Study – Many parents are squeezing potentially unhealthy amounts of toothpaste on their children’s brushes, health officials warned in a study released on Friday. The study, by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said nearly 40 percent of children ages 3 to 6 used more toothpaste than recommended by dental professionals. For young children with emerging teeth, swallowing too much fluoride toothpaste can cause discoloration of their teeth, a condition called dental fluorosis. Parents of children in that age bracket should squeeze no more than a pea-size amount of toothpaste on their brush, the C.D.C. and American Dental Association recommend. The C.D.C.’s survey of nearly 1,700 children in that age range found that about 38 percent of them used more than the recommended amount of toothpaste, which has the potential to exceed the daily recommendation of fluoride intake. Exceedingly high concentrations of fluoride in drinking water can also contribute to dental fluorosis, the dental association says on its website.

Arizona lawmaker says parents should get list of ingredients in all 
vaccines – A state senator wants to mandate that parents be told exactly which ingredients and chemicals are in vaccines before their children are inoculated. The bill introduced by Sen. Paul Boyer, R-Phoenix, would require that any health professional provide not just the positive effects of vaccinations but also the full list of ingredients and side effects before a vaccine could be administered. He pointed to a list from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that says vaccines may variously contain phosphate, bovine serum, formaldehyde, fluoride, yeast extracts or human diploid fibroblast cell cultures (cultures of human fetal tissue). Boyer said he’s not necessarily opposed to vaccinations for children and sidestepped questions of whether he personally believes vaccines are harmful. But he said there has been an explosion in the number of vaccines that are scheduled to be given to children, going from five in the 1960s to more than 70 now.
Survey: Half Of Doctors Considering Leaving Medicine — Because Of Health Insurance – Headaches Are health insurance policies creating nightmares for physicians and hazards for their patients? A new study finds that nearly nine in ten doctors believe barriers set by insurance plans have led to worsened conditions for patients in need of care. Researchers with Aimed Alliance, a non-profit that seeks to protect and enhance the rights of health care consumers and providers, say that doctors are so fed up with the constant headaches caused by insurers, two-thirds would recommend against pursuing a career in medicine, and nearly half (48%) are considering a career change altogether. For the study, the organization polled 600 physicians in the U.S. practicing either family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, or obstetrics/gynecology. The group sought to understand the extent to which insurance policies impact primary care physicians, their practices, and their patients on a day-to-day basis. They also wanted to get a better understanding of mental health issues among providers, as well as the causes behind the national provider shortage.
Emerging evidence of an impending Parkinson’s disease pandemic identified – For most of human history Parkinson’s disease (PD) has been a rare disorder. However, demography and the by-products of industrialization a now contributing to an impending a Parkinson’s pandemic, according to experts writing in a supplement to the Journal of Parkinson’s Disease. They say that this pandemic can be addressed by the Parkinson’s community forming a “PACT” to prevent the disease, advocate for policies and resources aimed at slowing its spread, care for all those affected, and treat with effective and novel therapies. Neurological disorders are now the leading cause of disability globally, and the fastest growing neurological disorder in the world is PD, a slowly progressive disorder that affects movement, muscle control, and balance. In 1855, forty years after Dr. James Parkinson first described the condition, approximately 22 people of 15 million in England and Wales died of PD. In 2014, roughly 5,000 to 10,000 individuals of 65 million in the UK died of PD. From 1990 to 2015, the number of people with PD doubled worldwide to over six million. Driven principally by aging, this number is projected to double again to over 12 million by 2040, and additional factors, including increasing longevity, declining smoking rates, and increasing industrialization, could raise the burden to over 17 million.
A CURE FOR CANCER? ISRAELI SCIENTISTS SAY THEY THINK THEY FOUND ONE – A small team of Israeli scientists think they might have found the first complete cure for cancer. “We believe we will offer in a year’s time a complete cure for cancer,” said Dan Aridor, of a new treatment being developed by his company, Accelerated Evolution Biotechnologies Ltd. (AEBi), which was founded in 2000 in the ITEK incubator in the Weizmann Science Park. AEBi developed the SoAP platform, which provides functional leads to very difficult targets. “Our cancer cure will be effective from day one, will last a duration of a few weeks and will have no or minimal side-effects at a much lower cost than most other treatments on the market,” Aridor said. “Our solution will be both generic and personal.” It sounds fantastical, especially considering that an estimated 18.1 million new cancer cases are diagnosed worldwide each year, according to reports by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Further, every sixth death in the world is due to cancer, making it the second leading cause of death (second only to cardiovascular disease).

ANTI-VAX MOVEMENT LISTED BY WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION AS ONE OF THE TOP 10 HEALTH THREATS FOR 2019 – The World Health Organization (WHO) has listed vaccine hesitancy—the delay in acceptance or refusal of vaccines despite their availability—as one of its top 10 health threats facing the world in 2019. The phenomenon has taken hold in a number of countries around the world in recent times, and notably in the U.S. as well. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that while coverage of most recommended vaccines remained relatively stable and high in 2017 for American children aged 19 to 35 months, the percentage who have received no vaccinations has quadrupled since 2001. According to a recent study published in the journal PLOS ONE, increasing numbers of people in many U.S. states now hold anti-vaccination views.

My sister-in-law was diagnosed with (CLL) Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, over a year ago. Recently her results got worse and doctors seem very negative and killing any hope, telling her it’s the kind of cancer that can never be healed. How to Inoculate Against Anti-Vaxxers – The World Health Organization has ranked vaccine hesitancy — the growing resistance to widely available lifesaving vaccines — as one of the top 10 health threats in the world for 2019. That news will not come as a surprise in New York City, where the worst measles outbreak in decades is now underway. Nor in California or Minnesota, where similar outbreaks unfolded in 2014 and 2017, respectively. Nor in Texas, where some 60,000 children remain wholly unvaccinated thanks in part to an aggressive anti-vaccine lobby. Leading global health threats typically are caused by the plagues and perils of low-income countries — but vaccine hesitancy is as American as can be. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the percentage of children who are unvaccinated has quadrupled since 2001, even though the overall utilization of most vaccines remains high. More than 100,000 American infants and toddlers have received no vaccines whatsoever, and millions more have received only some crucial shots.
About One In 20 American Children Have Depression Or Anxiety, Study Reveals – Analysis of nationwide data revealed that 2.6 million American children — more than 1 in every 20 — were diagnosed with anxiety and/or depression between 2011 and 2012. According to the report, anxiety in children and adolescents increased in the United States, while depression diagnoses have remained at the same levels as previous studies. Researchers analyzed data from the nationally representative National Survey of Children’s Health for 2003, 2007, and 2011 through 2012. In 2011 to 2012, 65,000 parents were asked about their children’s problems with anxiety and/or depression that has been diagnosed by a doctor or another healthcare professional. The children in question were aged six to 17 years. In the most recent survey, 5.3% of children and teens were diagnosed with current anxiety or depression. The percentage of children with current anxiety in 2007 was 3.5%. In 2011-12, it was 4.1%. The percentage of children with current depression rose from 2.5% in 2007 to 2.7% in 2012.
Energizing the immune system to eat cancer – Immune cells called macrophages are supposed to serve and protect, but cancer has found ways to put them to sleep. Now researchers at the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania say they’ve identified how to fuel macrophages with the energy needed to attack and eat cancer cells. It is well established that macrophages can either support cancer cell growth and spread or hinder it. But most tumors also express a signal called CD47, which can lull macrophages into a deep sleep and prevent them from eating. Researchers have found that rewiring macrophage metabolism can overcome this signal and act like an alarm clock to rouse and prepare macrophages to go to work. Their findings were published in Nature Immunology today. Macrophages are immune cells just like T and B cells, but differ in that they can eat cells that are not supposed to be in the body. In fact, they are the most prominent immune cell found in cancer, but unfortunately, most are often convinced to help cancer grow and spread. Cancer cells frequently stop macrophages from attacking them by expressing CD47, a “don’t eat me” signal. Researchers now say that merely blocking inhibitory signals like CD47 is not always sufficient to convince macrophages to attack cancer. Instead, two signals are required. First, they need a signal to activate them—such as a toll-like receptor agonist. After that, a second signal—such as a CD47 inhibitor—can lower the threshold needed to wage battle on the cancer.
