- So wait, is breakfast not the most important meal of the day? This op-ed piece seeks to point out the flaws in studies and reports that have long touted the advice to eat first thing. Perhaps the most important thing to get out of this is, whenever you eat, make sure that it is what your body actually needs – nutritionally and proportionally!
- The FDA has been talking about changing it’s “definitions for health” recently, and has just released new standards for food labels that will now state how much “added sugar” a product contains.This can be helpful for consumers to distinguish between what’s naturally occurring in the food, i.e. pasta sauce – tomatoes – and what is added for flavor. However, this will mean a lot of work and money for the food manufacturers, not a big deal if they are large enough to foot the bill, but it’s this type of government regulation and paperwork that make it difficult for small-time farmers and producers to get their products to market. Something to consider as we learn to think, shop, and cook.
- The US Food and Drug administration (FDA) recently proposed a maximum limit for inorganic arsenic, after several rice cereals for infants and toddlers were shown to have alarming levels of the substance. Although the proposal would seem to be cause for celebration, the FDA’s suggestion trails behind the European Union’s food safety guidelines, and continues to allow unlimited toxic heavy metals to infest America’s food supply.
- Recent tests by the Portuguese No GMO Coalition showed that volunteers in the country had extremely high levels of glyphosate in their urine, placing their contamination rate well above that of many places in Europe.
- It is not just the mere presence of glyphosate that is setting off alarm bells; the levels noted were also disturbingly high. The EU limit for acceptable levels in drinking water is 0.1 ng/ml. The average glyphosate value found in the Portuguese volunteers’ samples was 26.2 ng/ml – a whopping 260 times higher than the maximum legal limit!
- U.S. researchers say they’ve developed a small, wearable health monitor they’re likening to the “Star Trek” tricorder. The flexible Chem-Phys patch can be worn on the chest and tracks biochemical and electrical signals in the human body. It then communicates all that wirelessly to a laptop, smartphone or smartwatch, said a team of engineers from the University of California, San Diego.

- Women with early-stage breast cancer for whom chemotherapy was indicated and who used dietary supplements and multiple types of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) were less likely to start chemotherapy than nonusers of alternative therapies, according to latest research.
- Children living in agricultural areas are developing leukemia, brain tumors and other childhood cancers at an accelerated rate. Health problems in children have risen significantly in recent years, and the cause is primarily environmental. That’s the bottom line of a new report released by the Pesticide Action Network entitled “Kids on the Frontline,” which details the harmful and potentially fatal health effects pesticides are having on America’s children.
- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has ratcheted up its warning about the potential side effects of a class of commonly-prescribed powerful antibiotic, including the drug known by the brand name Cipro. In a safety announcement issued Thursday, the FDA is admitting the potential side effects often outweigh their benefits.
- A large new study confirms that exercise lowers the risk of many different types of cancer, and it goes a step further: It shows just how much the reduction in risk is. Check out the list of 13 types of cancer that can be affected.
- More governments around the world are moving to accept natural medicine: Could this be the beginning of a healthy future? In Switzerland, health insurance plans are on the cusp of covering homeopathy, herbal medicine, acupuncture, holistic care and traditional Chinese medicine. In 2009, two-thirds of the Swiss spoke out in favor of incorporating these important and long suppressed healthcare strategies into their healthcare system.
- Three cancer-stricken Nebraska farmers and an agronomist are suing Monsanto, alleging that the company misled consumers about the safety of Roundup, the most widely used herbicide around the globe. The World Health Organization labeled glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, as a likely carcinogen last year. The four Nebraskans suing all have non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, one of the types of cancer glyphosate is most associated with, the Lincoln Journal-Star reports.

- Deaths from the liver disease hepatitis C reached an all-time high in 2014, killing more Americans than HIV, tuberculosis and staph infections. Baby boomers, born between 1945 and 1965, are the hardest-hit group, accounting for 75 percent of all hepatitis C infections. Many of them have unknowingly been living with the infection for years and were most likely infected during medical procedures soon after World War II, when injection and blood transfusion technologies were not as safe as they are now, health officials said.
- The California Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) recently released a document called Evidence on the Carcinogenicity of Fluoride and Its Salts that highlights the many health hazards caused by the consumption of fluoride. And the Fluoride Action Network (FAN) recently submitted a compilation of its own to OEHHA, which is soon to make a final decision concerning fluoride’s toxicity, providing additional evidence that fluoride causes cancer.
- Scientific fraud published in reputable medical journals has soared more than 1700 percent since 2004, says report. According to data compiled from Thomson Reuters Web of Science, an index of more than 11,000 peer-reviewed journals from around the world, the number of scientific studies retracted for error or fraud from scientific journals worldwide has skyrocketed more than 15-fold since 2001.

- This seems obvious, yet another according to a study by the University of Birmingham and the University of Hong Kong, long-term exposure to environmental pollutants, and more specifically, to ambient fine particulate matter, is associated with an increased risk of mortality for many types of cancer. Is that why we’ve seen Chinese citizens walking the streets with masks for years?
- In an interesting commentary entitled “The problem with calling it all autism” Levi Quackenboss addresses those who say they wouldn’t change their autism because it is a part of who they are. The conversation about the wide, wide range of the “autism spectrum”, definitions of illness, and what makes a person, “you”, is important, and worth tackling in a respectful yet logical way.
- Yet another instance of the side-effects of cancer treatment. Patients treated for non-small cell lung cancer using stereotactic body radiation therapy have an increased risk of death from causes other than cancer, according to researchers in the Netherlands. In our letigious and politically correct society, another issue we are starting to see is that “cause of death” is becoming more and more literal. If you die of an infection, or a fall, which you body could not recover from given a weakened condition, due to medical treatment, the treatment will not be blamed, it will be the person, or an accident, or because they didn’t get the flu shot.
- Mumps outbreak at Harvard: Why do vaccinated people get sick? That’s because people in college dorms often share living spaces with dozens of people, giving them more opportunities to be exposed to the virus, either on surfaces or through contact with other people, Adalja said. Although being vaccinated against mumps can prevent a person from getting sick if he or she has been exposed to lower levels of the virus, for people living in dorms, vaccination may not be enough to ward off an infection, he said.
- In Zika news, articles published this week about the Zika debate in Congress offers a ray of hope for those of us who want to stop Congress from giving a 1.8 billion dollar gift to federal agencies and Big Pharma for the development of a Zika vaccine program.
- In a small, albeit important victory, a 10-year-old boy in Britain was awarded $174,000 after vaccine caused permanent brain damage and narcolepsy. Perhaps there is hope to set a precedent, and gain some further traction in the court of public opinon here. All is not lost friends, small battles are being won every day. Pollutants in fish may prevent humans from expelling toxins? Fish that contain environmental pollutants may harm people who eat them by preventing the human body from doing its natural job of flushing out toxins, researchers said Friday. The study in the journal Science Advances examined 10 persistent organic pollutants (POPs) — including the pesticide DDT and industrial chemicals such as flame retardants — found in yellow fin tuna and human blood and urine.

- Is a TB vaccine on the near horizon?
