- Researchers at the University of Vienna have discovered new details about how cells dispose of waste products in a new study. The study, published in the journal Molecular Cell, builds on previous scholarship by Yoshinori Ohsumi, which identified autophagy as the process by which cells rid themselves of viruses, bacteria and damaged material. According to the research team’s new findings, the key protein utilized in the process known as Atg1 is regulated in both space and time.
- You don’t say?? While it’s well known that healthy living can lower the odds for colon cancer, a new study finds it’s even true for men whose DNA puts them at high risk for the disease. Components of a healthy lifestyle include exercise, proper nutrition, no smoking and reduced alcohol consumption, the study authors said.
- In type 1 diabetes, the immune system attacks the pancreas and destroys its insulin-producing cells.Patients often develop other immune system diseases, too. Indeed, in the current study, 27 percent of patients had at least one other autoimmune disorder.
- Need Nitrates? Researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine (UC San Diego) have found an association between migraines and microbes that reduce nitrates. Analyzing data from the American Gut Project, they found that migraine sufferers harbored significantly more microbes in their mouths and guts with the ability to modify nitrates compared to people who do not get migraine headaches.

Anti-inflammatory drugs might someday treat depression? Based on previous findings about depression, the team looked at the side effects experienced by patients given anti-cytokine drugs in 20 separate studies. All the participants had chronic autoimmune inflammatory diseases, which occur when healthy cells are mistaken for infected cells, causing the immune system to attack the body and leading to inflammation. Anti-cytokine drugs “dampen down inflammation by blocking the actions of specific inflammatory cytokines … with ‘surgical precision’ and are now routinely used for treating patients who respond inadequately to standard treatments for inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and Crohn’s disease both in the US and Europe,” explained Dr. Golam Khandaker, a clinical lecturer in Cambridge’s department of psychiatry and lead author of the new study.

- The American Academy of Pediatrics has strengthened its warnings about prescribing codeine for children because of reports of deaths and risks for dangerous side effects including breathing problems. - Parents of children with cancer face difficult decisions, and a new study suggests that about one in six of them look back on some of their choices with a great deal of regret. But sometimes, the study’s lead author pointed out, parents may need to decide things like whether their child should take part in a clinical trial, or whether the child should have surgery.
- More than a dozen students at Florida State University (FSU) are sick with hand, foot and mouth disease, an illness that’s usually seen in young children. So why are college-age adults contracting the disease? The viral illness can cause fever, painful mouth sores, and a skin rash on the hands and feet, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It usually affects kids younger than 5 years old.
- Seven out of every 10 Americans ages 65 and older have high blood pressure, but nearly half aren’t taking their blood pressure medications correctly— and that’s leaving them at a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and death, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report released Tuesday. Improper use of blood pressure medication can mean skipping doses or stopping taking medication altogether.

- Actor Ben Stiller’s disclosure this week that he had prostate cancer, and his public plea for early screening — despite the medical evidence against it — has some health experts decrying it as the “Jolie effect.” In an interview on Howard Stern’s Sirius XM radio show and an essay later posted on Medium.com, the Zoolander actor said he owes his life to the prostate specific antigen (PSA) test — the same test doctors are being strongly advised not to use with asymptomatic men, particularly younger men like Stiller.
- A 73-year-old woman who died of complications from influenza was the region’s first fatality of the current flu season, county health officials reported Thursday. The unnamed woman died Tuesday after a brief hospitalization, according to the county Health and Human Services Agency. She was not vaccinated and suffered from existing medical conditions. “This is one of the earliest deaths from seasonal influenza ever reported in the county,” said Dr. Sayone Thihalolipavan, the county deputy public health officer. “The seasonal influenza vaccine is widely available and we urge everyone six months of age and older to get it before flu activity increases.”
- One in five cases of chemical-induced liver damage come from herbal and dietary supplements, a research review concludes. A decade ago, less than one in 10 cases could be linked to supplements, researchers report in the journal Hepatology. Up to half of U.S. adults consume supplements that contain ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, teas and proteins to improve diet, as well as illegal anabolic steroids, which are synthetic versions of testosterone used to boost athletic performance, the study found.

Could neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s originate in the gut? New research from the US, published in the journal Nature, shows that certain proteins produced by gut bacteria may be linked to neurodegeneration in rats. A team of researchers at Louisville School of Medicine found that neuron destruction processes in the brain could be triggered by proteins produced by gut microbiota.
- If the previous occupant of a hospital bed received antibiotics, the next patient who uses that bed may be at higher risk for a severe form of infectious diarrhea, according to a new study.

- Children who see “alternative” health providers, such as acupuncturists or massage therapists, are less likely than other kids to get their annual flu shot, a new study suggests. The findings do not prove a cause-and-effect connection, however.
- Flu-shot memes this year are of the “OMG!The flu shot contains mercury!” variety. While it’s true that some versions of the flu vaccine do contain trace amounts of mercury, such a statement is largely meaningless. Thimerosal, the organic compound used as a preservative in some vaccines, breaks down in the body into ethyl mercury. Since our bodies can remove ethyl mercury, it doesn’t bio-accumulate. This is very different from methyl mercury, found in trace amounts in certain fish like tuna.
- Stop reading the news and take up yoga. That’s what some therapists in the United States are telling patients stressed out by a nasty presidential campaign in which two unpopular candidates are in a tight race for the most powerful office in the world. Practicing yoga poses such as Half moon pose is hugely beneficial as it helps us to get a better posture and also helps get rid of various form of pain.
- Parents were asked whether specific messages— including nine longer ones developed by the CDC and six brief messages developed by the study team — would persuade them to have their children vaccinated. Seventy percent of parents said they’d support messages that emphasized the effectiveness of the vaccine. About two-thirds of parents said they would support messages about the cancers prevented by the vaccine and the safety of the vaccine. Three of the brief messages and eight of the longer messages were supported by at least half of the parents.
- Although many people are aware of the link between vaccines and cases of autism in children, what’s not so commonly known is the fact that vaccines also cause food allergies – and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has even corroborated the link in one of their own studies.

- A baby born in Canada to a mother who contracted the Zika virus abroad is normal so far, CBC News reports. The mother was infected while travelling in the first trimester of her pregnancy and the baby contracted it, but seems to be fine, Canada’s chief public health official told the news outlet.
- The first question people ask themselves when they find out they have cancer is, “How did I get it?” Yet 99 percent of those people will never figure out the answer to that question. Why? Because cancer is caused mainly by the cumulative consumption of toxins over time. If you keep consuming toxins, your oncologist can’t save you. Here are 8 suggestions for living the cancer-free life.
- Some skin products contain mercury and pose a threat to your health, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns. It’s important to check labels of skin creams, soaps and lotions. If “mercurous chloride,” “calomel,” “mercuric,” “mercurio” or “mercury” is listed on the label, stop using the product immediately. Do not use products if ingredients are not listed, the agency says. Mercury is often found in cosmetics marketed as “anti-aging” or “skin lightening” that claim to remove age spots, freckles, blemishes and wrinkles. Some teens also use the products to treat acne, according to the FDA.
- Glyphosate herbicide disrupts the development of the uterus of female rats when they are exposed for 7 days after birth, a new study (abstract below) by Argentine researchers shows. The glyphosate herbicide caused cell proliferation and structural changes in the rats’ uterus. This was in spite of the fact that no signs of chronic or acute toxicity or differences in weight gain were seen in treated pups. Glyphosate herbicide also disrupted the expression of proteins involved in uterine development.
- Two large studies suggest that surviving certain cancers in America could depend on your health insurance status. Despite improvements in cancer diagnosis and treatment, patients who were uninsured or had Medicaid coverage were more likely to suffer worse outcomes, compared with people who have other forms of health insurance, the studies found.

With outbreaks of measles, whooping cough and other infectious diseases occurring in recent years in places where the take-up of vaccinations has been low, the scientists behind the survey said its insights could help policymakers tackle such problems.
- San Diego residents are fighting the authorities on the Zika spraying in their neighborhood. While it seems like an obvious statement, “Pesticides are Poison”, officials are standing by their story that the spray will not harm the area.

When surgeons sit down with cancer patients before operations to talk through how procedures work and what they may accomplish, the conversation rarely includes mention of the possibility of a cure, a small study suggests. “Many physicians avoid discussing cure as they believe that cure cannot be accurately estimated so they may avoid taking up the topic,” Pawlik said by email. “Physicians may also avoid discussing the possibility of cure because of a belief that patients already have so many other things to think about such as procedure details, risks, getting ready for surgery, etc.”
- Despite efforts by the healthcare industry to cut back on low-value services, doctors continue to waste millions of dollars on them and new research suggests it could be linked to specific patients and types of insurance. About 8 percent of patients received a low-value healthcare service in 2015, with most being white and having more expensive insurance plans, suggesting the perceived overuse of certain procedures and tests has more to do with money than with the best care option for patients, according to a study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.

Whole brain radiotherapy is of no benefit to people with lung cancer which has spread to the brain,says research in the Lancet. A trial of more than 500 patients found that it did not prolong or improve their quality of life any more than other forms of treatment. More than 45,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer every year in the UK. In a third of cases, the cancer will spread to the brain. Secondary brain tumours are usually treated with whole brain radiotherapy along with steroids and other treatments to reduce the side-effects of cancer therapies.

- Although women who have been treated for breast cancer with chemotherapy have reported experiencing “chemobrain,” studies have not confirmed it as a real thing — until a recent study with mice at the University of Illinois. Mice treated with chemotherapy showed cognitive effects interfering with their ability to function in mazes for months after treatment ended, the equivalent of years in human lives. Although women who have been treated for breast cancer with chemotherapy have reported experiencing “chemobrain,” studies have not confirmed it as a real thing — until a recent study with mice at the University of Illinois. - Kris Kristofferson’s dramatic cure of his “incurable” Alzheimer’s disease – Apparently Kristofferson had been mis-diagnosed with Alzheimer’s dementia about three years ago, which started more than one medical misadventure for he and his neurologists involving neurotoxic medication trials with drugs. Those drugs that Kristofferson was treated with had been approved by the FDA on the basis of a couple of short-term trials involving only a few hundred so-called “Alzheimer’s Dementia” patients. The results that were submitted to the FDA showed only minimal improvement (albeit “statistically significant”), but only in mild to moderate dementia. Thus treating severely demented patients with those drugs was not FDA-approved (“off-label”).

Argentina is one of the world’s largest exporters of genetically-modified soya. It’s big business, but some local residents fear herbicides used by the industry could be making them sick. Horacio Brignone lives in the village of María Juana in the Argentine flatlands, or pampas. From his window he can see fields of soya. His 20-year old son has suffered from asthma since he was three years old, he says, but when he recently moved to a city the condition disappeared. “He hasn’t had an attack for two years since he went to study in Córdoba,” says Horacio. “But when he came home for two months recently, he began to cough again.”

- How does your aim impact your future? Following up on our 2nd Amendment marksmanship training, RSB and Dr. Rashid Buttar will reference how what you do today for your health can determine whether you will be alive at 80 or long since gone.
- If your targeting is off by a millimeter at 40 feet, it could be a mile off out further. Staying consistent with your targeting (practice) is more important than what you do in any one day.
- Although recovery time may be longer as your body ages, it’s never too late to start, unless you are already in the grave.
- Twenty-six million Americans suffer from kidney disease – that’s one in 10 – and West Virginia has the highest per capita rate in the country of patients with kidney failure starting dialysis. Gedney has been living with kidney disease since 1997, but it wasn’t until 2007 she came face to face with a life altering decision. “They said I needed to start dialysis or a transplant within a year, and I said well … thanks very much, but I’m going to Ecuador,” she said.
